After a 3-9 season and a roster overhaul heading into 2026, Colorado’s rebound path depends on how quickly it can stabilize two key parts of the team, a theme emphasized in a recent preview of the Buffaloes’ offseason priorities.
Colorado’s football program is entering 2026 with a clear mandate: stop the slide, rebuild the week-to-week reliability, and show tangible progress from the previous season’s 3-9 finish. A report from Yahoo Sports frames the coming year as more than just “another offseason,” describing it instead as the start of a full-on reset with a roster that will look markedly different than it did in 2025.
In that context, the Yahoo Sports piece highlights that not every position group will carry the same weight. With many areas needing improvement, the staff spotlighted two position groups they believe could define the Buffaloes’ ceiling for the season. The underlying idea is straightforward, Colorado can afford growth everywhere, but it cannot stumble repeatedly in the same places, particularly early in the year when teams have the least margin for error.
The “two groups” focus also reflects the reality of roster churn. Yahoo Sports notes Colorado is coming into 2026 with a completely different roster. When a program changes personnel at multiple spots, evaluation becomes more about functional cohesion and execution than individual talent alone. Even if the overall depth looks improved, chemistry, timing, and role clarity can lag, especially on both sides of the ball.
For fans and evaluators, the meaningful question for 2026 is whether Colorado’s two most emphasized position groups can become stabilizers rather than variables. If they perform like units with continuity and clear responsibilities, they can lift the rest of the team by reducing volatility. If they stay inconsistent, Colorado’s difficulties will compound across games, because every opponent will know where the easiest advantages are likely to come from.
This kind of reset has particular stakes in the Big 12, where week-to-week matchups are compressed into short windows and opponents are prepared for tendencies quickly. A 3-9 season creates urgency, but it also increases scrutiny of the program’s fundamentals: assignment discipline, pass protection and pressure management, gap integrity in run defense, and the ability to sustain drives. When multiple position groups need work, identifying the two that matter most is a way of narrowing the margin for error.
What to watch next is less about one isolated practice or one impressive day and more about patterns. Do the emphasized units hold up against both run and pass stressors? Do they protect the quarterback and win the fast-reaction moments that often decide third downs? Do they create manageable situations for the rest of the roster, whether that means cleaner coverage windows, steadier line play, or fewer repeat mistakes.
Because the specific “two position groups” identified by Yahoo Sports are not detailed in the excerpt available here, the exact targets should be treated as a checklist item for review as the offseason progresses. Still, the broader message is actionable: Colorado’s path back begins with operational improvement in two areas, and the results should show up in how often the Buffaloes look organized, not just how often they flash.
