A key early nonconference look at two programs in transition is on the calendar: the Buffaloes’ road trip to Northwestern on Sept. 19, with Deion Sanders coaching Colorado in Evanston.
What’s on the schedule for Colorado’s next stop outside the conference is also a storyline about leadership and roster turnover. In a 2026 opponent preview, Yahoo Sports flagged Colorado’s Sept. 19 matchup at Northwestern as a high-interest early-season date, noting that Deion Sanders will be on the sideline in Evanston.
The preview frames the game as part of Northwestern’s “lakefill” era, describing the event as the Wildcats’ presumably final game on the lakefill. For Colorado, it is an opportunity to establish early continuity under Sanders while navigating the downstream effects of departures that have been expected to loom from the program’s 2025 season.
Colorado’s 2025 performance, as characterized in the preview, was “lackluster,” and the piece points directly to the sense of change around the Buffaloes, specifically referencing Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders as departures that mattered to the team’s identity. The article treats those exits as context for why Colorado’s 2026 football environment may feel different even before kickoff.
The opponent preview format also matters because it highlights how both teams are trying to position themselves before the rhythm of conference play takes over. Northwestern is preparing for a matchup that will test its early cohesion against a Colorado staff led by Sanders, while Colorado is preparing for a road game where the venue and atmosphere carry extra attention.
Beyond the marquee coaching storyline, the game’s broader significance is how it affects each program’s early-season evaluation. For the Buffaloes, nonconference performance can shape how quickly new roles gel after major leadership and talent shifts. For the Wildcats, hosting Colorado under a nationally recognized coaching figure gives the early season a measuring stick in a way that can influence confidence and preparation.
Still, the preview is not a comprehensive game preview, and it does not provide details such as injuries, depth-chart changes, or confirmed roster moves. Readers should treat it as a scheduling and matchup context piece, and look for official school releases and later fall reporting to fill in the specifics as the date approaches.
