A widely repeated date of birth for Indianapolis cornerback Sauce Gardner is being challenged, after Gardner told The Athletic that his correct birthdate is Aug. 31, 2001.
Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner is pushing back on a discrepancy that has followed him across major sports databases. Multiple outlets have listed Gardner’s date of birth as Aug. 31, 2000, which would make him 25. Gardner says that date is wrong and that his correct birthdate is Aug. 31, 2001, meaning he is 24.
The confusion matters mainly because sports-reference style pages are often treated as the definitive record for player age, and age is a basic input for how fans and teams evaluate careers. According to Pro Football Rumors, Gardner made the clarification to James Boyd of The Athletic, disputing what has become a common online listing.
Gardner is entering the next phase of his NFL run with the expectations that come with being one of the league’s more productive defensive backs. Pro Football Rumors characterizes him as a two-time first-team All-Pro, which situates the age debate in a broader context: when a player is valued so highly, even small biographical inaccuracies can attract disproportionate attention.
The most immediate takeaway for the Colts is procedural rather than competitive. Player age is not typically a factor in week-to-week roster decisions, but it is part of the background information that organizations track through official documentation and league systems. When a prominent player calls out an online record, it often indicates that at least one database propagated an incorrect figure early on, and the error then spread through citations and mirrors.
There is also a communication component. The modern NFL media ecosystem relies heavily on standardized player pages and historical stats. If Gardner’s clarified DOB does not match those public entries, the issue can persist until database maintainers update their records, or until additional primary documentation is reflected in official league or team materials.
For fans and analysts, the better approach is to treat the clarification as the primary point for now and view the conflicting listings as a data quality problem. Until the NFL or the Colts’ official communications reflect the corrected DOB, online sites may continue to show different answers, which is why the next update to watch is a correction in the major stat and roster databases that currently list Aug. 31, 2000.
