With roster turnover trimming their internal wide receiver options, Indianapolis is reportedly evaluating whether it needs to bring in an additional receiver this offseason.
The Indianapolis Colts are mulling the possibility of making an offseason wide receiver addition, according to Pro Football Rumors. The idea fits a broader team-building question for 2026, how to stabilize production across a wide receiver group that already has key pieces but also has been reshaped by recent personnel moves.
Entering last season, Indianapolis carried what the report describes as a wide receiver surplus. Michael Pittman Jr. was part of the core as a longtime focal target, with Alec Pierce providing a deeper-threat profile, Josh Downs fitting a slot-and-quickness role, and Adonai Mitchell adding a younger, higher-upside dimension as a former second-round pick. That combination gave the Colts multiple ways to attack defenses depending on down-and-distance and coverage look.
But the report says trades have since reduced that “quartet.” It specifically notes that Mitchell’s contract was included in the Sauce Gardner trade. It also states Pittman’s contract was “dumped,” though the full details are not included in the portion available here. Taken together, the underlying premise is clear: the Colts’ previously crowded receiver rotation has been cut down, increasing the need to either reload from within or add outside help.
In the NFL, wide receiver depth is not just about who can catch passes, it is about practice structure, matchups, and availability across the season. When a team moves on from a top-tier volume option or a complementary piece, it can affect how the offense distributes targets even if other players remain on the roster. That is especially true for teams trying to maintain multiple looks without forcing one receiver to become an every-snap answer.
The Colts’ reported “addition” consideration does not, by itself, identify which type of receiver Indianapolis is prioritizing. A team that loses both a perimeter No. 1 style role and a secondary complementary piece could be looking for a new primary threat, but it could also be targeting a specific skill set, such as route-running efficiency for third downs, red-zone size, or a player who can create separation against press coverage.
For now, this remains an offseason evaluation rather than a confirmed signing or trade. What to watch next is whether Indianapolis follows through with a transaction that adds to the group, and whether the team leans more heavily on any remaining internal receivers to cover the gap in snaps and target volume left by earlier moves.
