A continuing “100 days to kickoff” series spotlights how Dallas Cowboys history is being ranked, using a mix of stakes, standout moments, and franchise firsts as the barometer.
The Dallas Cowboys’ offseason ritual of counting down to the next kickoff is now in its Day 85 installment, as the “100 iconic games” project continues to look back across the franchise’s most memorable performances. The series is structured to run up to the opening game of the 2026 NFL season, giving fans a daily trip through what the Cowboys have done, how those moments shaped the organization, and which games have endured in NFL lore.
The ranking is not built on a single factor like final score margins or star power. Instead, the series says it takes into consideration multiple elements, including how big the game was for the organization, how memorable the game was on a broader level, and whether unusual events took place. It also weighs how the game fits into NFL lore and whether it counts as a Cowboys first, alongside entries in which Dallas dominated in a way that stayed with fans.
Series writers also emphasize variety in what shows up on the list. That matters because franchise history includes different types of landmarks, from high-leverage postseason swings to classic regular-season statement games and contests that became part of the Cowboys’ identity. A “variety” approach tends to prevent the list from becoming a one-note catalog of only the most statistically dominant outcomes.
For readers, the practical takeaway is that Day 85 should be interpreted as another item in a broader ranking philosophy rather than a referendum on one specific era or quarterback. With the countdown nearing the start of the next season, it functions as both a storytelling exercise and a framing device, reminding fans that the Cowboys’ history is made up of many kinds of moments, not only the headline ones.
Because this installment is presented as part of a ranked series, the next question for viewers is how the list’s criteria will translate into the games that come later. As the countdown reaches the final stretch toward kickoff, the most notable patterns to watch are which categories (franchise firsts, league-lore moments, unusual events, and domination games) begin to cluster and whether the series increasingly leans on postseason milestones or keeps balancing regular-season classics.
At this point, the Day 85 entry has been described in terms of the project’s overall methodology and timeline, but the specific game being highlighted is not included in the available preview text. That means fans who want the exact matchup and context for Day 85 may need to consult the full installment page to confirm the game selection and the details the writers cite for it.
As the countdown closes in on 2026, the series also sets a useful lens for the season ahead. Even though it is retrospective, it can subtly influence what fans remember as “iconic,” and that collective memory often becomes the backdrop against which teams define expectations once the new year of football begins.
