Cowboys’ offense leaders point to re-establishing the run as the fix for 2026 inconsistency

Cowboys’ offense leaders point to re-establishing the run as the fix for 2026 inconsistency

Dallas’ playmakers and coordinator say the path to steadier scoring is more balance, especially getting back to Javonte Williams’ role and reducing “streaky” starts and stalls.

The Cowboys’ offensive leaders are zeroing in on one central answer to their inconsistency in 2026: re-establish a run game that they believe will create the balance needed to produce offense across four quarters.

Entering Sunday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers with a 2-3 record, Dallas has looked capable of sharp momentum swings, but often stalled in the first half and then had to wake up later. Offensive coordinator Klayton Adams described the problem as something bigger than one drive, saying the offense has been “streaky” and inconsistent.

Adams’ solution is tied to identity and balance. Using a boxing analogy, he said the Cowboys have effectively been throwing with one hand because they have not been good enough in the run game, and that they need to be able to “hit” with both hands.

Quarterback Dak Prescott linked that emphasis on the run to the bigger pattern of the offense starting fast and staying on pace. He said establishing the run would be “huge,” and framed consistency as scoring earlier and then keeping drives coming, instead of having to climb back after the defense forces them off the field.

CeeDee Lamb emphasized the follow-through side of the same theme. He argued that when the defense makes a stop, the offense has to capitalize more consistently so Dallas can move from “off-and-on” scoring toward playing with pressure on opposing defenses.

On the personnel side, Adams pointed to Javonte Williams as the foundation for the reset, and he also explained why the Cowboys are pairing him with a complementary back role. He referenced the Cowboys’ loss of Malik Davis just before the start of the season, tested Emari Demercado in the complementary slot, and said it has been Tyler Goodson who appears best suited to provide what Davis would have.

Adams added that part of the plan is workload management: he said the Cowboys want to take some reps off Williams while still keeping the run game central, describing Goodson’s fit in terms of what Dallas is asking him to do. Prescott and Lamb’s comments framed that run emphasis as the lever that can make Dallas more balanced, and therefore more reliable, drive to drive.

Why It Matters

  • For a team that has alternated between early momentum and mid-game stalls, the run-game emphasis is the clearest adjustment Dallas is publicly pointing to as they try to sustain leads.
  • Balancing the offense has playoff implications, since late-game comebacks and drive-by-drive inconsistency force the defense into heavier workloads.
  • The complementary-back plan (Goodson’s role relative to Williams) suggests Dallas is seeking a steadier weekly offensive identity rather than relying on a single rhythm.
  • Against Green Bay, the Cowboys’ stated focus on run balance sets a direct matchup theme: keeping their offense on the field through sustained drives instead of scoring sporadically.
