As Dallas moves into its offseason lull and looks ahead to training camp, Denzel Mims’ role becomes a key question in the wide receiver and depth-chart conversations heading into roster finalization.
The Dallas Cowboys are entering a break period after the most recent wave of offseason team work, with training camp still ahead later next month. In the middle of that seasonal rhythm, Yahoo Sports turned to one of the Cowboys’ roster questions that does not get settled until the later part of the calendar, Denzel Mims and his chances of surviving the final 53-man roster reductions.
The core issue is straightforward, NFL rosters do not simply reflect talent or potential, they reflect availability, fit, and performance under evaluation. For a player on the bubble, “making the roster” usually means earning enough trust from the coaching staff to be used in games, not just getting reps during organized team activities. That distinction tends to separate players who can impress briefly from players who can consistently meet the daily standards that matter to a 53-man group.
Dallas’ offseason “finished a strong stretch” of work, according to the Yahoo Sports piece, and the front office has been active even as the players take a step back. In practical terms, that means the organization is still weighing a range of considerations when it turns to its next major phase: how many wide receivers and pass-catch options it wants to carry, how those players fit into the team’s different personnel packages, and who gives the staff the best mix of route skill, separation ability, and reliable hands.
Because the final roster is built close to training camp and the preseason, Mims’ opportunity hinges on what he can show when the evaluation environment tightens. Training camp and preseason periods typically answer the questions that OTAs and minicamps only partially illuminate, such as whether a player can produce consistently against live coverage and whether he can win work on special teams, the most common gateway for fringe receivers.
The wide receiver position also brings a built-in level of competition. Even when a team has clear starters, it must still decide how many snaps to distribute to the next tier of players, especially when the coaching staff wants options for injuries, matchup changes, and game-plan adjustments. For a player trying to reach the 53-man roster, the bar is usually “multiple ways to help,” not just one standout skill.
Without needing to assume a specific roster spot, the realistic roster path for someone in Mims’ category is usually iterative. It starts with carving out practice attention during training camp, then it builds toward measurable opportunities in preseason games, and it culminates in the day-to-day decisions that coaches make when the roster cut line arrives. In that sense, the timing of the Cowboys’ offseason break matters, because the next time fans see the player in a heavily evaluated setting will be training camp.
What to watch next for Dallas is not only whether Mims is on the field, but how his usage and performance compare to the rest of the group vying for depth roles. If he is frequently integrated into offensive reps and also tested for special teams value, that would align with how teams typically justify a roster berth for a player near the cut line. If the coaching staff treats him more as organizational depth for now, that would suggest he may be waiting for a later phase to earn his case.
For now, Yahoo Sports has framed the moment as a chance for fans to evaluate the likelihood of Mims making the team, but the true confirmation will arrive only once Dallas reaches training camp evaluations and the preseason roster picture sharpens. Until then, his odds are best understood as a question of readiness for the next, more demanding window of NFL assessment.
