Cubs’ Dominick Reid builds a six-pitch profile in Arizona Fall League, and early results show it’s taking hold

Selected in the 2025 Draft as a largely two-pitch right-hander, the No. 28 Cubs prospect is showing major-league readiness indicators while refining a full arsenal in Arizona.

Dominick Reid is being asked to do something that rarely happens overnight for a young starter: turn a two-pitch foundation into a six-pitch repertoire. In his Arizona Fall League stint with the Mesa Solar Sox, the Cubs’ No. 28 prospect is doing it while keeping the results in front of him.

Reid’s current pitch mix is broader than the one he came into pro ball with, and MLB reports he is throwing a six-pitch mix that includes a four-seamer, sinker, cutter, curveball, changeup, and sweeper (tracked as a slider in Statcast).

The AFL production cited by MLB is as notable as the list of offerings. Reid has allowed two runs across 12 innings while striking out 14 batters, including four strikeouts against top-100 overall prospects Sebastian Walcott, Aidan Miller, and Ike Irish.

His development path also helps explain why the moment matters now. MLB reports that after a 12-start opening stint at Single-A Myrtle Beach (4.17 ERA, 50 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings), Reid was shut down with a shoulder impingement and missed nearly three months of game action.

Even with the setback, the Cubs point to an elite changeup as the early constant in Reid’s growth. MLB reports the changeup graded as a “60-grade” pitch at Abilene Christian, contributing to 112 strikeouts in his final year with the program-record mark.

The next step is consistency and sequencing, and MLB frames the sweeper as the current emphasis. Reid has thrown the sweeper primarily to right-handed hitters, and MLB reports it has landed in the zone 16.7% of the time across his first two AFL outings with Statcast data, though batters have missed it frequently when they swing, including seven whiffs on 12 swings against his cutter “up to” about 10 mph harder.

For the Cubs, the central question is whether a growing arsenal can translate into innings and strikeouts against high-end competition. Through the early AFL sample described by MLB, Reid’s mix is passing a key test.

Reid’s final AFL work appears designed around more than just adding pitches. MLB also notes he is refining run-game decision-making, attacking the strike zone, and handling adversity while the tools change from outing to outing.

For now, the evidence available is early and sample-limited, but the thrust of the story is clear: Reid’s trajectory is shifting from two pitches that work to a broader set of options that can keep hitters off-balance.

Why It Matters

  • For the Cubs, Reid’s progress is a direct read on whether a pitch-arena reinvention can survive contact against high-end prospects.
  • A successful six-pitch profile broadens how the organization can deploy Reid if he advances, especially when hitters adjust to one look.
  • The early AFL performance described by MLB provides a heavier test than typical lower-minors environments, since it pits prospects from multiple organizations against one another.
  • If Reid continues to tighten control and sequencing around his sweeper while staying effective against strong competition, the team gets a clearer path toward a frontline starter profile.
