Chicago’s bullpen takes a short-term hit as right-hander Daniel Palencia is shut down, prompting the return of Gavin Hollowell from Triple-A Iowa.
The Chicago Cubs moved quickly to address a pitching concern on Tuesday, placing right-handed reliever Daniel Palencia on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. The move came after Palencia appeared late in a tight game against the Colorado Rockies, where he struck out three hitters in the ninth inning to help earn a 5-4 comeback win.
For the Cubs, the transaction is both a medical decision and a roster-management problem. High-leverage relief roles are difficult to replace on short notice, and an elbow issue can limit a reliever’s ability to throw with the same velocity and command that managers rely on in late innings.
With Palencia unavailable, Chicago recalled Gavin Hollowell from Triple-A Iowa. Hollowell’s promotion matters in the near term because it determines how the Cubs fill out their late-inning options and how the bullpen is managed during subsequent innings where games are decided by one or two batters.
Palencia’s IL placement is also notable because it arrives immediately after a strong appearance. According to the report, he recorded three strikeouts in the ninth inning hours before the club announced the elbow inflammation diagnosis, a sequence that underscores how quickly bullpen risk can surface even in the middle of an ongoing season.
The Cubs-Rockies game context adds another layer. A comeback win relies on each bullpen phase holding up, so any disruption to the bullpen’s top end can change how Chicago approaches later games, including how they sequence relievers and who is available for back-to-back appearances.
It is not yet clear from the publicly available reporting how long Palencia’s recovery window will run beyond the standard 15-day designation, or whether additional steps such as further imaging, a throwing progression, or a longer shut-down period could follow. The club will likely provide additional updates as Palencia’s workload is evaluated.
For Hollowell, the path from Triple-A to the major-league bullpen is often steep and time-sensitive. The key question now is whether he is deployed immediately in the same game situations Palencia would normally handle, or whether Chicago will ramp his workload more gradually as part of its risk management plan.
