Indianapolis is aiming to have its starting quarterback back on the practice field soon after his Achilles rehab progress through minicamp work.
The Indianapolis Colts are planning for QB Daniel Jones to participate at the start of training camp, according to a report from Pro Football Rumors on June 21. The expectation is rooted in Jones’ recovery from an Achilles tear, with the next practical checkpoint being whether he can transition from limited spring activity into a fuller offseason-to-preseason workload.
Jones’ rehab has reportedly gone without setbacks. During this month’s minicamp, the report says the Colts were able to move him from individual drills to seven-on-seven work, a sign that the team feels comfortable enough to test him in more game-like team settings. In the spring, he was held back from participating in 11-on-11 drills.
The timeline matters because offseason practice is where teams evaluate timing, communication, and decision-making, all of which are especially important at quarterback. If Jones can take part early in camp, even if his reps are managed, the Colts could gain more time for continuity with their offense before the preseason begins.
The report further suggests that Jones could avoid being placed on the physically unable to perform list at the opening of training camp. That distinction is not just procedural. Being on the PUP list generally delays participation for a player who is not yet cleared for full practice. Avoiding PUP, if accurate, would indicate the Colts expect him to be available in some form during the earliest stages of camp.
Training camp itself is typically structured to ramp practice intensity and workload over time, but the first days carry a particular value. Coaches use the opening window to install plays, assess quarterback reads under pressure, and build rapport across the offensive group. A partial start by the team’s lead quarterback can still be important, especially if the plan is to continue building his comfort level and conditioning.
Still, the report also implies there could be limits. It notes that Jones may not handle a full workload immediately at the beginning of camp. That caveat is common in return-from-injury situations, even when a player is cleared to practice in team settings. Fans and roster planners should expect monitoring, careful rep distribution, and a gradual increase as camp progresses.
