Even with offensive struggles against the Knicks and Thunder, the Spurs’ biggest long-term question is less about Fox’s talent than whether they can afford to move a player built to run their offense.
The debate around De’Aaron Fox has returned to the NBA spotlight this week, with CBS Sports framing his postseason as a headline disappointment even while acknowledging the Spurs’ incentive to keep him. In that telling, the Finals were the stage where Fox’s limitations were most visible, and the Western Conference playoffs did not provide much relief either. That has naturally fueled trade rumors and the usual offseason question, if a star’s postseason is that uneven, why keep paying the price to retain him?
CBS Sports’ recap points to shooting as the clearest through-line in Fox’s struggles. The article cites his postseason shooting splits at 41.4% from the field and 29.4% from 3, calling them an “eyesore.” Those numbers matter because they touch the two parts of Fox’s offensive responsibility: turning possessions into efficient points inside the flow, and spacing the defense enough to keep his drives from becoming predictable. When both areas dip, defenses can play more comfortably for the moment, even if Fox still generates pressure through speed and decision-making.
The scrutiny is specific to matchups. Against the Knicks, CBS Sports describes Fox’s performance as “terrible,” while carving out one exception, a stronger showing in Game 2. The narrative also highlights a single late moment, a biggest-shot-of-his-life type sequence to close Game 3. That mix, a star who can still produce highlight-level results even when the overall production is shaky, is often what keeps trade conversations from turning into a full reset.
In the Western Conference Finals against the Thunder, the CBS Sports piece suggests Fox was not much better, reinforcing the sense that this was not a one-series problem. Whether those performances reflect shot quality, matchup design, or simply a cold stretch is exactly what separates rumor from resolution. Still, in postseason basketball, “cold” can become a team-building problem if it persists long enough to change how a roster is evaluated. Fox remains the kind of centerpiece who can’t be ignored even when his numbers are underwhelming.
From the Spurs’ perspective, the logic cuts both ways. Trading a franchise-level guard is rarely just about fixing a box score. It is about replacing not only scoring, but also ball-handling orchestration, pace control, and the ability to convert possessions when the offense gets messy. CBS Sports’ framing is blunt about the postseason, yet it argues Fox is still a “luxury the Spurs can afford to keep,” implying the team’s internal calculus may weigh Fox’s role and ceiling over the shooting splits and game-by-game volatility described in the report.
What to watch next is whether the Spurs’ stance stays grounded in basketball fit rather than postseason perception. If they treat Fox as a long-term offensive engine, expect the offseason conversations to shift from whether he is “good enough” in high-leverage moments to what roster support could reduce the burden on his jumper and decision-making. If the trade chatter grows, it will likely depend on whether a credible alternative can match what Fox does beyond pure efficiency. For now, Fox’s postseason has made him a harder sell, but the Spurs’ willingness to absorb the rough edges is still, in this report’s view, the more immediate plan.
