Delta Air Lines grants help a Clayton County nonprofit replace a burned delivery van and add refrigeration for fresh food

The Delta Air Lines Clayton County donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta is funding vehicle replacement and refrigeration upgrades for The Online Food Pantry Mobile Food Market, a 2018 nonprofit that delivers food directly to families across metro Atlanta.

Delta Air Lines is providing grant funding to help a Clayton County nonprofit restore and expand a mobile food delivery operation after a fire destroyed a key delivery vehicle earlier this year. The support is intended to ensure the organization can continue delivering food to families facing food insecurity across metro Atlanta and improve its ability to transport fresh, perishable items safely.

The nonprofit, The Online Food Pantry Mobile Food Market, was founded in 2018 by CEO Frederick West. According to Delta’s update, the organization has helped more than 80,000 people access food assistance by recovering surplus food from local partners and delivering it to residents across six metro Atlanta counties.

Delta said the organization’s delivery van was destroyed by fire earlier this year, threatening the ability to serve the community. Through the Delta Air Lines Clayton County Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Delta provided a $25,000 grant to help purchase a replacement vehicle and restore delivery services.

As the nonprofit resumed delivery efforts with a new van, it also identified a new operational need: refrigeration. In Delta’s account, the additional cold storage requirement would allow the nonprofit to safely transport fresh produce, meat, and other perishable items, which are harder to deliver without temperature control.

To address that gap, Delta awarded an additional $35,000 grant to install a refrigeration system and support operating expenses. The update frames the combined funding as both a recovery effort after the fire and an upgrade to improve service quality and food safety for perishable categories.

West, the nonprofit’s CEO, said in Delta’s release that Delta’s support arrived at a critical moment. He described the donation as more than just replacing a vehicle, saying it helped restore hope, maintain the nonprofit’s ability to serve, and continue ensuring food reaches people who need it most.

The grants also tie into a broader philanthropic structure in Clayton County. Delta said the Delta Air Lines Foundation and Delta support 22 food banks in cities and regions around the globe, and that Delta invested more than $1.8 million through corporate funding and grants in 2026 alone.

Delta’s release places the Clayton County giving within the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s longer-running role in regional philanthropy. The foundation said it stewards more than $1.8 billion in assets and deploys more than $235 million annually to thousands of nonprofit partners, providing ways for donors to direct resources to community needs.

For the nonprofit, the immediate effect is clear in the steps described: replacing the burned delivery van and adding refrigeration capacity to broaden what can be delivered safely. What remains less specified is how the refrigeration system and the added operating expenses translate into longer-term delivery frequency, coverage, or changes in the mix of foods delivered beyond the categories described.

Looking ahead, Delta’s update suggests the partnership will continue through the donor-advised fund and related foundation efforts. For observers tracking corporate giving, the case highlights how targeted funding can quickly address an operational disruption in community services while also enabling process upgrades that help meet food safety needs for fresh items. The key question now is how quickly the nonprofit can fully scale the improved refrigerated delivery capability and maintain service continuity for the families it supports.

Why It Matters

  • The funding underscores how corporate and donor-advised giving can respond rapidly to operational disruptions that can otherwise interrupt hunger-relief services.
  • Adding refrigeration capacity can expand the range of perishable foods a delivery program can safely transport, which may improve nutritional outcomes for recipients.
  • The episode illustrates a localized approach to philanthropy, with Delta channeling support through a Clayton County-specific giving vehicle at a major regional community foundation.
  • For the broader hunger and food-systems sector, the case reflects a common operational challenge, balancing logistics, equipment needs, and food safety requirements.
