A bottom-third finish, uneven goaltending, and a reported early setback involving Jack Hughes have New Jersey weighing major roster changes, with one recent NHL analysis pointing to several likely trade chips.
The New Jersey Devils are entering the summer in a reshaping mood after a 2025-26 season that left them outside playoff contention. In an analysis published Tuesday, Yahoo Sports suggested the team may pursue a larger trade and identified three “tradable assets” that could become central pieces of a broader rebuild or retooling effort.
The stakes around that decision are clear in the basic outcome. The Devils finished in the bottom third of the NHL standings in 2025-26, a result that usually forces management to evaluate whether the mix of players and performance levels are aligned with the team’s goal of competing in the Eastern Conference.
The Yahoo Sports piece attributed part of New Jersey’s struggles to a major, early disruption: an “off-ice injury to Jack Hughes.” It also cited goaltending that did not meet expectations and described the Devils’ path as made even more difficult by an unusually demanding Eastern Conference schedule of opponents, leaving them with limited room to absorb setbacks during the season.
The practical meaning of that framing is roster triage. When a top scorer or central offensive driver is unavailable early, it can ripple through special teams, line chemistry, and the development timeline for younger forwards. When goaltending is below the level needed to keep games close, it also affects shot volume decisions, defensive risk tolerance, and how quickly a team is forced to chase results.
At the same time, trade plans rarely start with a single problem. Even when one issue stands out, teams usually look to adjust multiple areas in a single offseason by moving a mix of skaters and prospects for established players, or by using controllable assets to target age-appropriate roster balance. In that context, a “tradable assets” list is often shorthand for what general managers can realistically move without sacrificing long-term flexibility.
However, readers should treat Yahoo’s proposal as an offseason outlook rather than a confirmed transaction. The article describes potential trade targets and the rationale for why they could be available, but it does not, in the preview material provided, offer specific details like the identity of those assets, the expected return, or whether New Jersey has already entered formal discussions. Until the Devils or the NHL releases official updates, the key takeaway is process: New Jersey appears to be thinking in terms of trade leverage.
What to watch next is straightforward. First, whether the organization makes any public comments that clarify its timeline, for example whether it prioritizes immediate competitiveness or a more extended rebuild. Second, pay attention to whether the Devils’ summer activity centers on upgrading goaltending and stabilizing defensive play, since that is one of the report’s cited performance gaps. Third, monitor any clarifications around Hughes, because his availability and role would meaningfully shape both roster construction and the trade calculus.
In the NHL, a team’s offseason direction is often visible long before any deal is finalized, through the types of assets discussed, the positions management targets, and the internal urgency created by another season outside the playoff picture. For New Jersey, the early-season disruption and goaltending concerns described by Yahoo Sports help explain why this summer could involve more than minor adjustments, even if the exact form of the moves remains to be determined.
