Disney and Philips expand Disney-themed MRI “Ambient Experience” to help children stay calm during scans

The partnership integrates Disney characters and stories into Philips’ pediatric MRI calming environment across medical facilities in 87 countries, citing early study results that reduced stress and scan pauses.

Disney and Philips have announced the rollout of Disney characters and stories inside Philips Ambient Experience for MRI, aiming to make pediatric scans feel less intimidating and reduce disruptions during exams. The companies said the Disney content will be integrated into the Ambient Experience platform at medical facilities in 87 countries worldwide, marking a first-of-its-kind use of mainstream storytelling themes inside MRI rooms for children.

Philips said the core problem is familiar to pediatric imaging teams: MRI can be especially difficult for young patients due to the size of the equipment, the loud noises, and the requirement to remain perfectly still for up to 40 minutes. In the announcement, Disney and Philips pointed to a statistic that 66% of pediatric patients report feeling anxious during MRI scans, with anxiety and claustrophobia sometimes contributing to longer procedures, repeat imaging, and in some cases the need for sedation.

To address that, the partners described Philips Ambient Experience as a clinical environment that uses calming lighting, sound, and visual elements before and during the exam. Within that setup, patients can choose Disney stories and characters that are displayed during the scan, with the goal of shifting attention away from the machine and toward familiar, kid-friendly narratives.

Disney framed the collaboration as an extension of its broader work to bring comfort and emotional connection to children and families in healthcare settings. Lisa Haines, Disney’s senior vice president for corporate social responsibility, said stories can help create “moments of escape, normalcy, and reassurance” for children in hospitals, and that Disney was working with Philips to bring that effect directly into MRI rooms.

The announcement also relied on results from a multi-center study across six European hospitals, which Disney and Philips said evaluated Disney-themed Ambient Experience interventions for children ages 6 to 10. After the scan, pediatric patient stress levels were reported to be reduced by 43% compared with pre-exam levels, and pauses during scans fell by 63%, suggesting fewer interruptions during what can otherwise be a time-sensitive imaging workflow.

Emilio J. Inarejos Clemente of Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, quoted in the release, said the data indicated that a child-friendly audio-visual intervention reduced stress and scan disruptions, supporting a smoother MRI workflow that helps clinicians stay focused on delivering high-quality imaging. Atul Gupta, MD, chief medical officer for diagnosis and treatment at Philips, added that reducing stress can improve the experience for young patients and families while helping care teams deliver efficient imaging so they can see more children each day.

Philips said Disney themes are offered as part of its Ambient Experience for MRI and that the Disney content is integrated exclusively within this platform. It also said hospitals can offer a selection of characters and franchises, including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Marvel superheroes, Star Wars favorites, and Disney Princesses. Disney also said it provided the art and imagery used in the MRI environments at no cost as part of its charitable work with children’s hospitals.

Beyond this specific MRI collaboration, Disney said the company has built healthcare-specific content and environments through longstanding partnerships with children’s hospitals, and it described a recently fulfilled commitment of $100 million supporting more than 1,700 children’s hospitals and pediatric places of care in 45 countries. It also pointed to staff training through Disney Institute programs and the distribution of items to children in care settings.

Philips said early adopters include pilot hospitals across Europe and hospitals such as Rady Children’s Health of Orange County and Calderdale Royal Hospital. Philips also stated that Disney-themed content will roll out to new and existing MRI installations with Philips Ambient Experience for MR from “Release 4 onwards.” What is not detailed in the announcement is how quickly specific hospitals in the 87-country figure will adopt the themes, which MRI hardware configurations are used in each site, or how results translate to measures like sedation rates, total scan throughput, and longer-term outcomes across different patient populations.

Why It Matters

  • The deal ties a major media brand directly to a clinical care workflow, potentially creating a replicable model for using entertainment-led distraction in pediatric imaging.
  • If the reported reductions in stress and scan pauses hold broadly, hospitals may gain operational benefits through fewer interruptions, fewer repeat scans, and potentially reduced reliance on sedation.
  • For Philips, the integration expands the value proposition of its Ambient Experience platform beyond general comfort features into a recognizable, differentiated content offering.
  • For Disney, the partnership reinforces its healthcare and community investment approach by placing licensed franchises into high-stakes medical environments, where comfort and compliance can affect outcomes.
