Disney plans a cross-platform “America 250” week with a 24-hour broadcast and new parks experiences
As the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, The Walt Disney Company is rolling out primetime television, next-day news coverage across multiple networks, and anniversary-themed additions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The Walt Disney Company is escalating its “Disney Celebrates America” campaign for the U.S. 250th anniversary with a new slate of broadcast programming and parks activations planned across ABC, Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, National Geographic and Disney’s resorts. The company says the effort is designed as a company-wide commemoration of American stories, traditions, and “firsts,” spanning live reporting and immersive guest experiences tied to major dates in early summer.
Disney’s primetime launch will come first. On June 29, ABC will air a two-hour special, “Disney Celebrates America: The Pursuit of Happiness,” hosted by 20/20 co-anchor Deborah Roberts and national correspondent Will Reeve, with reporting from Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Disney says the program will connect American history and culture to locations that range from Main Street, U.S.A. to Tomorrowland, with each segment framed around “true tales of American ‘firsts.’” The company also said the special will run from 8-10 p.m. PT/ET.
The campaign then shifts into a 24-hour cross-platform event from July 3 through July 4. Disney says ABC Entertainment, ABC News, ESPN, and National Geographic will deliver a continuous broadcast spanning ABC, Disney+, Hulu, FX, Freeform, ABC News Live, and ESPN, plus ABC-owned television stations and affiliates. Disney described the program as taking viewers across all 50 states, guided by World News Tonight anchor David Muir and joined by an array of ABC and ESPN personalities including Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America co-anchors Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan, and co-hosts from The View.
Among the curated segments Disney highlighted for the multi-day broadcast is “Wonders of America,” a collaboration between ABC News anchors and National Geographic Explorers. The company said the segment will feature a “Seven Natural Wonders of America” list created with National Geographic, with Hawaii volcanoes announced as the first wonder on Good Morning America. Disney said six more locations would be revealed during the Fourth of July programming, paired with on-the-ground reporting from ABC News talent. National Geographic, in parallel, is also launching a summer storytelling package across print, digital, and social channels starting June 16.
Sports is getting its own programming track during the anniversary window. Disney said ESPN’s flagship news and information program, SportsCenter, will air a special two-hour edition on ABC on July 4 from 2-4 p.m. PT/5-7 p.m. ET. Disney described the show as a celebration of the people, moments, and stories that have shaped American sports culture, with live reports from SportsCenter anchors nationwide, plus historical and talent-led segments.
Disney’s U.S. theme-park programming includes a reimagined Soarin’ ride with a national itinerary. “Soarin’ Across America” is presented as a flight experience spanning the United States, and Disney said it is already open at EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort and will debut July 2 at Disneyland Resort in Southern California. The company described the attraction as spotlighting more than a dozen locations, including the New England coastline, Mount Rushmore, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Grand Canyon West, and said the experience features an updated arrangement of the Soarin’ score by composer Bruce Broughton.
At Walt Disney World, Disney said the queue will include National Geographic photography and trivia for “Soarin’ Across America,” while at Walt Disney World it will also feature an interactive “Soarin’ Challenge Across America” quiz. Disney said the questions use “superlatives” to ask guests to select which state is “Most Likely to Reach for the Stars” or “Most Likely to Strike Gold.” The company said “National Geographic” content will extend beyond the ride into guest-facing experiences designed to add learning and discussion points before boarding.
Disney said the parks celebration also reaches beyond entertainment into patriotic lighting and cultural programming. At Walt Disney World, Disney noted patriotic lighting on Spaceship Earth, performances from Voices of Liberty, and the Electrical Water Pageant, along with themed décor, character experiences, and limited-time merchandise, food, and beverage offerings. Additional activities include flag retreat ceremonies, performances by the Dapper Dans and Main Street Philharmonic, and an extended run of the Portraits of Courage exhibit honoring post-9/11 veterans through Fourth of July weekend.
The company is also tying parts of the anniversary to support for U.S. military families. Disney said it is expanding its relationship with Blue Star Families via a previously announced $2.5 million commitment to strengthen military families and communities. In a separate Disney update on its Blue Star Families work, the company said the partnership began in 2011 and that Disney VoluntEARS assembled 4,000 “Welcome Kits” during National Military Appreciation Month in May, along with a new emphasis tied to the Library of Congress “Blue Star Books” event. Disney also said it has donated more than 370,000 books to Blue Star Families over the years and that the Library of Congress gathering brought together over 500 military children and family members.
Disney’s plans are designed to keep the anniversary visible across its entertainment and hospitality footprint, but some details remain broad. The company did not provide specific advertiser or ratings commitments for the broadcast, nor did it release a complete, time-coded schedule for every segment in the 24-hour programming window. It also did not disclose audience measurement targets, production budgets, or how guests will be prioritized at rides and events during peak holiday days. With the program dates now set, attention will likely turn to how the network slate performs and whether “Soarin’ Across America” becomes a sustained draw for the summer season.
For what to watch next, Disney’s early milestones are clear: the June 29 ABC primetime special and then the July 3-4 cross-platform broadcast led by David Muir and featuring multiple ABC News and ESPN anchors. In the parks, “Soarin’ Across America” has a staggered start with Disneyland Resort opening July 2, while Walt Disney World already has the experience available. Disney is positioning the campaign as a two-track moment, combining live storytelling at home with interactive, National Geographic-tinged experiences inside its resorts as the U.S. moves toward its 250th anniversary celebrations.
Why It Matters
- The initiative is a high-visibility content and brand moment for Disney across linear TV, streaming and sports networks, aiming to tie viewership to a singular national date.
- By linking a major theme-park reimagining to the broadcast window, Disney is effectively bundling its entertainment flywheel, using experiences to reinforce programming and vice versa.
- The “Blue Star Families” tie-in extends the campaign beyond entertainment, helping Disney position the rollout as community and veteran-support focused rather than purely promotional.
- For advertisers and partners, the expanded July 3-4 cross-platform footprint could influence how marketers allocate budgets toward premium, event-driven programming around major holidays.
