Disney’s ABC News launches Verts, bringing a vertical-video news feed to the ABC News app
The Walt Disney Company says the first phase of Verts for ABC News lets users swipe through breaking updates, analysis, and reporter-led coverage through a new bottom-navigation experience on mobile.
Disney is rolling out Verts for ABC News, a vertical-video feature designed to help readers move through breaking news and continuing coverage faster on mobile. Beginning Oct. 5, users of the ABC News app can access a new Verts icon in the bottom navigation bar that opens to a dynamic vertical feed, with the company presenting the launch as the first phase of a broader “vertical video” push inside ABC News.
In the company’s description, Verts is built for the moment users open the app, offering what Disney calls a fast path to essential headlines, analysis, and ongoing story coverage. The vertical feed is positioned as interactive and mobile-first, using the same consumption behavior associated with short-form video on smartphones rather than requiring users to switch to a traditional scrolling news layout.
Disney says the Verts feed inside the ABC News app includes news reports sourced across ABC News’s existing portfolio, including material from its linear, streaming, and ABC Owned Television programming. Alongside those feeds, Disney says the experience also features original content from ABC News anchors, correspondents, analysts, and other featured voices.
The rollout also ties to a broader company strategy previewed earlier in 2026. Disney says it was first announced at the company’s 2026 Global Tech & Data Showcase, where it described vertical video across Disney’s core products as a way to deliver up-to-date context and analysis for top stories throughout the day through a swipe-based experience.
For evidence that the format can drive engagement, Disney points to early performance on ESPN and Disney+. The company says Verts was introduced on ESPN in August 2025 and has become the primary driver of short-form video consumption for the ESPN app, citing usage and time-spent figures it says it has observed to date.
Disney’s reported ESPN metrics include that more than 26 million users have used Verts on mobile devices, generating over 1.8 billion minutes of time spent in the ESPN app. Disney also says Verts drives 65% of user-initiated short-form video starts, surpassing ESPN’s legacy video player.
On Disney+, Disney says it is seeing increases in engagement depth tied to Verts, estimating that approximately 43% of mobile Disney+ users have already interacted with Verts. Disney did not provide additional breakdowns on how those interactions translate into retention, subscription behavior, or ad impressions.
Looking ahead, Disney says Verts is not limited to the ABC News app. The company says viewers will soon be able to see Verts across mobile and web. Over time, Disney says the experience will expand to include more correspondent content, additional formats, and new content types, with an emphasis on personalization.
The company’s release does not disclose specific targets for ABC News Verts, such as expected changes in daily active users, time-on-app, click-through rates, or ad inventory. It also does not detail how editorial selection, personalization, or moderation decisions are handled inside the feed, beyond describing an approach centered on utility and scale.
For news consumers, the immediate question is whether vertical video can become an everyday entry point for ABC News coverage rather than a secondary viewing option. For Disney, the key watch item is whether the engagement gains it cites from ESPN and Disney+ carry over to ABC News users and whether the experience broadens beyond headline discovery into deeper story exploration.
Why It Matters
- Vertical video is becoming a core distribution and engagement tool across media, changing how audiences encounter news and how platforms package editorial content.
- Disney is using performance data from ESPN and Disney+ to support an expansion of Verts into ABC News, indicating confidence in short-form formats for non-sports editorial contexts.
- If Verts increases time spent or interaction on ABC News, it could reshape how ABC News prioritizes video production, story structure, and personalization.
- The rollout suggests a shift toward “swipe-to-update” interfaces, which may affect user behavior and potentially advertising opportunities on mobile and web.
