THE APEX TIMES
A look at Mason McTavish, Jansen Harkins, Ryan Poehling and Jeff Viel frames how Anaheim intends to carry its on-ice lessons into the next draft cycle.
With the 2025-26 Anaheim Ducks season now concluded, attention has started to shift from last-minute results to what the club can extract from its year of growing pains. In a By the Numbers-style recap, Yahoo Sports broke the Ducks’ season into player-focused development threads, starting with center Mason McTavish and continuing through forward Jansen Harkins, Ryan Poehling and Jeff Viel.
McTavish’s inclusion in the series underscores Anaheim’s need for reliable production and decision-making from its core group. As an established piece of the Ducks’ forward mix, the spotlight on him is less about a single moment and more about whether his overall game is trending in the right direction as the organization plans its next roster iteration.
Jansen Harkins’ portion of the review reflects the Ducks’ broader organizational emphasis on players who can contribute in multiple game states. When a young or developing forward gets front-and-center in a season recap, it usually indicates a focus on areas like role clarity and consistency, including how often the player can create offense or sustain pressure rather than only generating impact in short stretches.
Ryan Poehling and Jeff Viel, meanwhile, represent how Anaheim evaluates depth forwards and transitional talent. A team does not just count the goals it scores. It also studies how role players fit the system, how they handle time on the puck, and how their minutes translate into repeatable habits. Having multiple depth forwards featured in the same recap is a clue that the Ducks view the season as a full-process evaluation, not simply a campaign for headline stars.
Heading into the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, those internal evaluations matter because draft decisions are future-facing. The Ducks will be balancing immediate needs with longer-term identity, and player-by-player review articles are often part of how organizations reinforce what they want to replicate: the kind of skating patterns, puck support, and net-front presence that can be developed in the farm system and carried into the NHL lineup.
What to watch next is how Anaheim turns these season themes into actionable roster planning. That includes which player traits the organization prioritizes in prospect scouting, and whether the team uses the offseason to create clearer roles for current NHL forwards while continuing to funnel prospects into NHL-ready roles. With the draft near, the Ducks’ internal message will likely show up quickly in how they frame their selections and development priorities.
Because this story is based on a secondary recap article and not on league-issued statistical tables or team releases, readers should treat the details as a high-level developmental review rather than a definitive performance summary of each player. The best confirmation points will come from the team’s official offseason communications and any publicly released player performance breakdowns from the club or league.
