The fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history has spread further across eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to government figures released Friday, reaching a total of 60 affected areas across the region.
Ebola has spread to two additional health zones in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, bringing the total to 60 areas affected, according to the latest government figures published Friday by The Washington Times. The report described the outbreak as the fastest-growing Ebola episode in history and said the new areas mark further geographic expansion beyond earlier reported zones.
The two new health zones were identified in the government data, extending the outbreak’s reach in a part of the country that has faced repeated humanitarian and security challenges. While the report did not provide separate figures for case counts by zone, it framed the increase in covered areas as a key indicator of rapid spread.
The Washington Times said the figures were part of the latest official update and that they were released on Friday. The change implies that outbreak response planning and public health logistics must now cover a larger number of locations, increasing the demand for staff, protective equipment, laboratory capacity, and safe community outreach.
In practical terms, the addition of health zones expands the scope of surveillance and case-finding operations, including identifying suspected cases, coordinating referrals, and supporting follow-up for contacts in newly affected areas. As the outbreak spreads, authorities also face greater operational complexity in maintaining consistent infection prevention and control practices across multiple jurisdictions.
The outbreak’s continued spread comes at a time when regional health systems are often strained. Broad geographic expansion tends to raise the risk of additional transmission pathways, particularly where road access and security conditions limit movement and where communities may have uneven access to healthcare services.
An accompanying photo in the report showed vaccination activity in Congo, reflecting that public health interventions are already underway as the outbreak changes shape. The government’s decision to publicly track affected zones indicates that officials are treating geographic expansion as a public-facing metric for directing response resources.
For residents in the affected areas, the immediate impact is the widening footprint of the outbreak and the corresponding need for guidance on how to seek care and reduce transmission risks. For authorities, the next step is continuing to update the public as further zones are assessed and as response teams adjust coverage to the outbreak’s new geography.
