Erik Sabrowski begins rehab in Akron, turning 20-pitch outing into a first step back

Erik Sabrowski took an early step toward returning to the Cleveland Guardians bullpen on Wednesday night, beginning a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron. In his first outing, the left-hander threw 20 pitches and completed two-thirds of an inning as Akron worked through a controlled, limited workload designed for players coming back from injury.

Sabrowski’s line was efficient on the strikeout front but imperfect in terms of run prevention. The assignment resulted in two unearned runs, a detail that matters for interpreting the appearance because it indicates the damage credited to the opponent did not stem from hits off the pitcher. He allowed no hits, issued one walk, and struck out two batters during the 2/3-inning stretch.

Rehab outings like this are built to accomplish two goals at once. First, they provide a realistic live-game environment for a pitcher to ramp up command, pitch movement, and repeatable mechanics under pressure. Second, they offer the organization a way to measure how the arm responds after throwing, including tracking workload and assessing how quickly the pitcher can recover between sessions.

For Cleveland, Sabrowski’s progress carries particular importance because bullpen roles often depend on reliable availability and specific matchup feel, and left-handed options can be especially valuable over the course of a long season. While a rehab appearance is not the same as being ready for major-league innings, Wednesday’s outing functioned as a checkpoint, confirming that Sabrowski can still miss bats and operate through hitters in a game setting.

The performance also offered a straightforward reading of what’s working. Striking out two batters on 20 pitches suggests he generated swing-and-miss outcomes without needing extended exposure. Meanwhile, the walk and the two unearned runs point to the kind of variability that can occur in short stints, when teams and players are still finding rhythm and innings are managed carefully.

Akron’s game context is less consequential than the individual workload and the way Sabrowski finished his brief stay on the mound. The Guardians can use the outing as a baseline for the next step in the rehabilitation plan, with the next rehab appearance typically shaped by pitch count, recovery time, and how the pitcher performs when facing hitters again.

What to watch next is whether Sabrowski’s subsequent rehab outing builds cleanly from this first appearance, including improved run prevention and maintained effectiveness against the same level of competition. If the left-hander continues to handle live hitters without a setback, he would be moving closer to rejoining a Cleveland relief corps that values depth and specialized arms.
