THE APEX TIMES
The latest ESPN preseason rankings for college football were released in the summer, refreshing the early pecking order for teams chasing the sport’s first meaningful postseason benchmarks.
ESPN has released an updated summer preseason Top 25 for college football, adding another reference point to an offseason already packed with position-by-position evaluations and program-level course corrections. For Ohio State, the change matters even when it feels incremental, because preseason lists are often the first public report of how voters, analysts, and opponents will frame the Buckeyes’ ceiling heading into camp and the fall schedule.
Ohio State’s inclusion in ESPN’s Top 25 confirms the program’s status as a perennial national title contender in the eyes of the outlet’s ranking group. At the same time, the timing of the release is notable. Summer preseason rankings typically reflect a blend of returning production, projected roles, and the general development arc of a team as it moves from spring practices into full fall preparation. That makes these lists feel less like final answers and more like a snapshot of expectations immediately before games begin.
ESPN’s update arrives during “the throes” of the college football offseason, when storylines tend to shift quickly. Over the spring and early summer, programs can solidify quarterback and skill-position depth charts, adjust offensive and defensive packages, and finalize recruiting classes and roster priorities. The Top 25, therefore, is not only about who is best on paper, but also about who is best positioned to convert that paper into consistent Saturday football across a full schedule.
For Ohio State, this kind of placement also carries a secondary effect: it shapes how other teams calibrate their own expectations. When a program is kept in the upper band of a preseason list, it tends to raise the level of scrutiny in marquee matchups, influences media narratives around conference positioning, and can affect the way recruiting and transfers are discussed publicly. It also places a premium on early-season stability, because an offseason ranking is easy to confirm, and just as easy to challenge, as soon as games start producing evidence.
Still, preseason rankings have limitations. A Top 25 released in summer is built on projections, not results, and college football is unusually sensitive to variables that can appear after the list is published, including player readiness, role changes, and the development of key units. The best way to read ESPN’s summer Top 25 is as a starting point for the conversation, not as a forecast that locks in final outcomes.
The next test for Ohio State and every ranked team will come when the season calendar turns from simulation to verification. As camp evaluations transition into kickoff-week preparation, the questions behind ESPN’s ranking will be answered through performance: how well the offense handles live-game speed, how reliably the defense executes its assignment structure, and how quickly the program coalesces around its most important roles. If Ohio State can match the standard implied by its place in the Top 25, the ranking will feel less like prediction and more like recognition.
