Ezequiel Duran takes home his first Gold Glove, rewarding a year built on versatility

ARLINGTON, Va. (Nov. 1, 2026) – The central question of the Gold Glove announcement was whether Ezequiel Duran’s all-over-the-field defense would be enough. It was: the Rangers utility star won his first career American League Gold Glove Award at the utility position, Rawlings announced Sunday.

Duran, nicknamed “The Solution” for his capacity to play multiple spots at a high level, was also described by Rangers manager Skip Schumaker as a uniquely valuable defender, and Schumaker pointed to the concern that no other outcome would match the season Duran produced.

The Rangers’ Gold Glove night also included other high-profile finalists, with Jacob deGrom, Wyatt Langford, and Evan Carter named as finalists at their respective defensive positions. None of them won, leaving Duran as the first Ranger to win a Gold Glove at utility.

Defensively, Duran’s season profile was defined by breadth. He made starts at every position except pitcher and catcher, logging starts at shortstop (49), third base (41), second base (25), center field (14), left field (9), right field (7), and first base (1).

His defensive impact translated across multiple spots in the metrics cited by MLB. Duran posted a team-high 16 outs above average, tied for sixth most in MLB, and recorded positive OAA at shortstop (11), second base (3), and third base (2). He was also among a smaller group of players with 1+ OAA at least three positions.

In defensive runs saved (DRS), he compiled 1+ DRS at three positions, with totals at third base (3), right field (3), and shortstop (1), reinforcing the “utility” case as more than positional coverage.

Schumaker’s comments underscored how the Rangers valued Duran’s combination of defense and overall game contributions, including the team’s view that he has been among its most impactful baserunners. MLB’s release ties the award to a year that combined those two themes.
