Tampa Bay won 16-0 at Raymond James Stadium, completing zero passes, and Atlanta’s players and coach pushed back on the idea that weather alone explains what went wrong.
Atlanta’s response to a shutout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was direct: the team said the wet conditions could not be used as an overall explanation for its performance.
In the Falcons’ Week 8 game at Raymond James Stadium, the rain was relentless from kickoff, with the teams understanding before the start that passing would be difficult and turnovers would be possible. Atlanta quarterback play never stabilized in the air.
Tampa Bay won 16-0 while Baker Mayfield never completed a pass. The Falcons’ own offense also struggled to sustain anything offensively, and the Buccaneers leaned heavily on the run game throughout the afternoon.
The Falcons told the story they believed the game reflected: when it turns into a ground-and-ball-security contest, the margin gets thinner and execution matters more. Atlanta said it planned for the conditions and that those conditions were the same for both teams.
Beyond the weather, Atlanta pointed to mistakes it created. Running back Bijan Robinson said the issue for Atlanta was what it did, not what the forecast brought, and Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles and Falcons coaches framed the result as a matter of who made more plays in the same conditions.
Defensively, Falcons safety Jessie Bates III described the game environment as the most chaotic he had been a part of, but both Bates and Atlanta’s offensive leadership emphasized readiness as the real challenge, regardless of forecast or field conditions.
