First-ever Billings Navy Week Lands in Big Sky Country

More than 80 Sailors will arrive in Billings, Montana, next week to kick off the city’s first-ever Navy Week, Aug. 17-23.

Throughout the week, residents will have a unique opportunity to experience naval traditions and gain a deeper understanding of the Navy. Through community service projects, performances and educational events, Billings Navy Week, the eighth stop on the Navy’s “Road Trip to 250” anniversary celebration, will showcase the modern fleet and the Sailors who keep it mission-ready.

Highlighting the importance of shipbuilding advancement and fleet readiness, hometown Sailors will join crews from Montana’s namesake submarines, USS Montana (SSN 794) and USS Helena (SSN 725). The week will culminate in the Yellowstone International Air Show, Aug. 22-23, featuring the Blue Angels, alongside public performances by Navy Band Northwest and the Navy Ceremonial Guard drill team.

“Participating in this Navy Week is a distinct honor, especially as it allows me to return to my hometown,” said Chief Petty Officer Calvin Moseman, a graduate of Billings West High School. “My family and friends often ask about my work and the broader mission of the Navy, and while I do my best to explain it, this event provides a unique opportunity to show them firsthand. It is a powerful way to amplify the Navy’s presence here in the Rocky Mountains.”

Senior leaders, including the Honorable Benjamin Kohlmann, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and acting Navy Surgeon General Rear Adm. Matthew Case, will meet with civic, education, business and government leaders. Other participating units include U.S. Naval Academy, Naval History and Heritage Command and Navy Meteorology and Oceanography Command.

Navy Weeks bring the Navy to regions without a major naval presence, fostering connections and showcasing how the fleet defends the homeland. By demonstrating how the service takes care of its Sailors and continuously advances shipbuilding and fleet readiness, these engagements highlight how the Navy’s mission ensures the security, prosperity and freedom of our nation. The Navy Week program has visited more than 100 U.S. cities since its inception in 2005.
