Detroit’s defense played a decisive role in a gritty 19-15 Week 8 victory, limiting Minnesota’s high-end scoring attack and helping fuel a late-game control of the football.
The Lions took a 19-15 lead midway through the fourth quarter and then finished the job, with defense and special teams setting up the offense to run out the clock in Sunday’s Week 8 win over the Vikings.
Detroit arrived facing a Minnesota defense described by the Lions as the NFL’s best in points allowed (12.3 per game entering the game), and the defensive unit responded by holding the Vikings to 266 total yards and 15 points.
All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson was limited to 33 receiving yards, while Minnesota converted just 3 of 10 third downs and failed on its only fourth-down try.
After injuries forced Detroit to expand roles, multiple defenders stepped in, including center Juice Scruggs, linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Trevor Nowaske, edge rusher Derrick Moore, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and safety Keith Abney II.
Offensively, Detroit leaned on the run to match the game-state, with Jahmyr Gibbs rushing for 153 yards and scoring on a 30-yard run, while Sione Vaki added 65 yards. Detroit ultimately produced a 69-yard, seven-play drive after a T.J. Hockenson touchdown and then added another late scoring play by way of a Jameson Williams touchdown catch from the run-heavy attack.
