GE Aerospace leans into training to scale engine parts manufacturing in Pune
The aerospace supplier says its multimodal plant outside Pune is ramping production, and that a decade-long apprenticeship and leadership pipeline has helped it grow output and meet rising demand.
GE Aerospace is betting that workforce development is as critical as shop-floor equipment for scaling jet engine parts. In May 2014, the company opened a $200 million manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Pune, India, outfitted with advanced production tools including electron-beam welding machines, vacuum furnaces and 3D laser trackers. But GE Aerospace said the facility’s most important asset took longer to build: a skilled workforce trained specifically for precision aerospace manufacturing.
Over the next decade, GE Aerospace says plant leaders trained more than 5,000 local engineers and operators through on-site programs designed to bridge classroom learning and real production work. The company also attributes growth in output to that internal pipeline, stating that as employee skills and team maturity improved, production grew tenfold. It describes the Pune site as manufacturing “hundreds” of components for its commercial jet engine lines, from CF6 through GE9X.
GE Aerospace says the Pune operation is now positioned to support a ramp-up as aviation demand expands in India and recovers abroad. It adds that orders for engine parts are outstripping pre-pandemic levels. GE Aerospace describes an in-house aerospace manufacturing school that starts trainees with a curriculum tailored to the Pune site, developed with input from a university professor. The company’s two-year apprentice program is structured to combine theory and practice, including classroom sessions and on-the-job shadowing. In the early stages, trainees are taught core tooling and programming skills, including CNC programming and routing, and GE Aerospace says trainees graduate into roles that can include running machines for their teams.
The company also highlights safety and quality as non-negotiable parts of the training process. In the Pune facility’s model, junior engineers are trained on safety and project-specific quality practices, while newer hires participate in structured instruction. GE Aerospace cited an example of a safety boot camp covering topics such as chemical management, forklift operation and working at height. Separately, it described environmental health and safety training that includes first aid and firefighting preparation.
GE Aerospace further points to leadership development to keep the workforce pipeline aligned with plant operations. It said more seasoned employees can apply for a two-year Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) that rotates participants through different leadership teams, building visibility into expectations and challenges across a multifunctional factory. In its profile of the Pune plant’s leadership track, the company linked ELP participation to later progression into roles spanning production planning and materials and supply chain management.
Still, GE Aerospace did not provide some operational details in its workforce-focused account, including the specific mix of components added with the $30 million expansion, the expected timeline for new capacity, or how many incremental roles the company plans to create in Pune. What it did disclose is the existence of an expanding training and mentoring system, and a later company profile said the program brings on roughly 400 to 500 apprentices each year. For now, the key question for investors and industry watchers is whether the manufacturing school and leadership pipeline can keep pace as GE Aerospace scales output and introduces “some” parts it says have never been made in India.
