Georgia GOP runoff voters select Mike Collins to challenge Sen. Jon Ossoff in November, as Trump ties federal nomination delay to voter ID push

Republican runoff voters in Georgia chose U.S. representative Mike Collins as their nominee to face Democratic U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff in November, according to The Guardian’s live updates from Washington and Georgia. The runoff result sets up the general-election matchup for the Senate seat after Collins emerged from the party’s narrowed field.

Separate from the election news, President Donald Trump said he was delaying the nomination of Jay Clayton for a federal post described by The Guardian as leadership of the U.S. intelligence community. Trump characterized the hold as a way to compel Congress to act on a voter identification bill that he said currently lacks enough support to move forward.

Trump’s account, as relayed by The Guardian, framed the nomination delay as leverage aimed at advancing federal voting rules. The report said Trump was using his administration’s personnel process to put pressure on Congress around the bill’s prospects.

The timing of both developments is likely to shape the federal agenda in the weeks leading up to the November election. Collins’s nomination places him in the general-election focus, while Trump’s stated linkage between nominations and election legislation raises questions about how quickly congressional negotiations could translate into action.

For now, the nomination status and the congressional path of the voter identification measure remain subject to the administration’s next steps and Congress’s legislative calendar. If Congress advances voting legislation, the administration could revisit whether the delayed nomination proceeds, depending on the final bill text and the nomination’s legal and procedural requirements.
