GHSA reshapes 2026 Georgia high school football state championship week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The Georgia High School Association will run its 2026 state football championships on a different calendar and in a different layout than in recent years, with the biggest change centered on how Mercedes-Benz Stadium stages football versus girls flag football.

Over the past few seasons, flag football has opened each day of football championships, and the full slate has stretched across three days. For 2026, the GHSA will split the sports into separate blocks. Football championships will be played over two days, from Tuesday, Dec. 15 through Wednesday, Dec. 16, while flag football will be scheduled the week prior and completed in one day.

The GHSA’s decision is tied to the growth of girls flag football within the state championship structure. As reported to local media, the setup for 2026 follows the addition of a fifth flag football division, which has led officials to arrange the tournament so girls flag football can “stand alone” rather than serving as an early-day opener for football.

The football postseason itself still begins in November, with the GHSA playoff run scheduled to kick off round one on Friday, Nov. 13 and continue through Friday, Dec. 4. That means the state championship week in mid-December will be the capstone for the classifications that survive the regular playoff path, but the venue schedule will be more segmented than it has been.

GHSA spokesperson Marvin James said the change was a request from Mercedes-Benz Stadium to allow girls flag football to stand apart in the event presentation. In practical terms, that affects how fans, families, and teams will plan around when championship games occur at the stadium, since the flagship football titles and the flag title rounds will no longer share the same daily window.

The change also arrives during a broader period of evolution for Georgia’s high school playoff and classification structure, as the GHSA has adjusted how berths are selected and how teams are seeded in recent cycles. Even with those earlier administrative shifts, the 2026 championship week format is a reminder that the association is still calibrating the overall fan and event experience as participation grows.
