Designated for assignment last week, Will Brennan remained with the organization after clearing waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Sacramento, keeping his path to the majors open through the rest of the season.
San Francisco designated hitter? No, the club’s move centers on the outfield as the Giants announced that Will Brennan cleared waivers after being placed on waivers following a designated-for-assignment. Once a player is DFA’d, the next step often determines whether a team can keep him in the organization or must lose him to another club that claims him. In Brennan’s case, he was not claimed, and the Giants kept him within their system by assigning him outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Giants assigned Brennan outright to Triple-A Sacramento after the waiver process played out without a claim. The transaction had come about a week earlier, when the Giants designated the 28-year-old outfielder for assignment. That sequence matters because DFA decisions generally follow roster needs at the major-league level, especially when teams must create space for other moves.
Brennan reached three years of big league service with the Giants this season, which technically gives him the option to reject an outright assignment in favor of certain protections tied to service time. The MLB Trade Rumors report indicates the assignment comes with that choice, underscoring the practical stakes of clearing waivers but also the procedural nuance of what comes next for a player with enough time in the majors.
For the Giants, the decision keeps a player who has already appeared at the top level within reach, even though he is headed to Triple-A. Triple-A Sacramento typically serves as the primary depth pipeline, where players can work on adjustments to swing decisions, pitch recognition, and outfield reads, all with the possibility of another call-up if a roster opening develops.
From Brennan’s perspective, the outright assignment is both an opportunity and a constraint. It preserves his place in the organization rather than moving him to another club via a waiver claim, but it also places the immediate focus on producing at the Triple-A level to earn a return to San Francisco. If he does not find a clear path back quickly, the remainder of the year can become a test of consistency and readiness rather than one-off chances.
The Giants’ need for roster flexibility is the backdrop for moves like this, especially midseason when teams balance daily lineup needs with pitching schedules, travel demands, and injury risk across positions. Even when an outgoing major-league roster spot is filled, teams often keep a veteran bat or defensive option available in the minors rather than leaving it to the waiver market.
Looking ahead, the next storyline is whether Brennan uses Sacramento as a springboard back to the majors and whether the Giants’ outfield mix changes further before the summer ends. For San Francisco, this move also indicates that the organization values maintaining depth with players who have already logged big league service, even as it continues to fine-tune the active roster.
