San Francisco reduced its 40-man count to exactly 40 by cutting nine players and moving others off the major-league roster, clearing space for 15 players reinstated from the 60-day injured list.
The San Francisco Giants used Monday’s roster churn to address a 40-man roster crunch, sending nine players out of the organization’s major-league group to bring the club down to an even 40.
José Buttó and Tristan Beck were the most notable names included in the departures. Buttó, acquired from the Mets as part of the Tyler Rogers deal at the 2025 Trade Deadline, appeared in only three games this season before season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot from his right arm. Beck, who debuted for the Giants in 2023 after arriving from the Braves in the Mark Melancon deal, posted a 4.08 ERA over 85 appearances across his last four seasons in San Francisco.
In addition to Buttó and Beck, the Giants cut other players and worked through waiver outcomes to create roster space. Duncan Davitt (Reds), Brett Harris (Phillies), Shay Whitcomb (Phillies), and Zach Morgan (Orioles) were claimed off waivers. Joel Kuhnel and Seth Lonsway cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, while Tristan Beck was placed on unconditional release waivers and Reiver Sanmartin was designated for assignment.
The roster space the Giants created was immediately directed toward reinforcements from the 60-day injured list. San Francisco reinstated 15 players on Monday, including hitters and pitchers such as Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt, Harrison Bader, Daniel Susac, and pitchers like Adrian Houser and Keaton Winn.
San Francisco also made a longer-range roster decision involving right-hander Rowan Wick. The Giants declined Wick’s $800,000 club option for 2027, but he remains under club control and will be eligible for arbitration this winter after missing the entire 2026 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
