Google expands Street View coverage to Kosovo, bringing landmark streets and monasteries to Maps

Google is rolling out Street View coverage for Kosovo, using imagery captured by Street View vehicles to let users explore the country from home through Google Maps. In a product announcement published July 31, Google highlighted the new availability of virtual tours across cities, historic sites, and rugged terrain.

To begin a Street View session, Google says users can open Google Maps on a computer or mobile device, select a location, and drag the yellow Pegman icon onto a blue line. The company’s post frames the update as a way to view both modern cityscapes and older heritage locations, accessible through the same maps interface people use for navigation.

In Pristina, the capital, Google pointed to several landmarks it says are now viewable in Street View. It cited the modernist National Library of Kosovo, which it describes as the country’s most important center for historical archives. Google also referenced nearby sights including the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa and the Newborn Monument, and said the city’s markets and cafes are part of the new virtual tour experience.

Google’s post also emphasized Kosovo’s religious and historical monuments, particularly those tied to the UNESCO World Heritage listing known as the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo. It described virtual routes along approaches to the Gračanica Monastery and roads leading to the Patriarchate of Peć Monastery, calling attention to surrounding mountain scenery. It further pointed to the Visoki Dečani Monastery and to streets near the 14th-century Church of the Holy Virgin of Ljeviša in Prizren.

Beyond the UNESCO-listed sites, Google said Street View coverage extends to Prizren and other towns. In Prizren, it highlighted the Gazi Mehmed Pasha Hammam, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, and the Old Stone Bridge. In Gjakova, Google referenced the Tanner’s Bridge and the Terzi Bridge, describing the latter as an Ottoman-architecture structure built over the Erenik River.

For users looking for outdoors content, Google pointed to Rugova Canyon near Peja, describing it as one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe and saying the Street View experience offers expansive views that can support hikers and travelers planning trips. Overall, the company described the coverage as spanning Kosovo’s “evolving urban centers and timeless sights,” with imagery captured during a Street View vehicles journey across the country.

While Street View updates typically aim to improve discoverability and trip planning, Google’s announcement did not quantify how much new imagery has been added, which neighborhoods or roads are fully covered, or when specific streets in Kosovo first became available within Maps. The company also did not disclose any technical details about the capture process beyond stating that Street View cars drove across Kosovo to record the scenes.
