Google Health and Fitbit Air get new Coach features, smarter activity tracking, and fresh hardware accessories

In an update aimed at making wearables feel more like a continuous health assistant, Alphabet’s Google says it is expanding Google Health Coach capabilities, deepening Apple Health integration, and rolling out a new Health Guardian suite to select Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge users.

Google is positioning its health platform as a more active, personalization-driven experience by updating both software and wearable hardware under the Google Health and Fitbit brands. In a new post from the Google Blog, the company outlined more than a dozen improvements to its Google Health app and Google Health Coach, alongside new wearables and accessories, including the next-generation Fitbit Edge tracker and a metal band designed to turn Fitbit Air into a day-to-night piece of jewelry.

Google says it has continuously released new functionality for the Google Health app and Google Health Coach since introducing the tools, describing “more than 55” feature updates over time. The update focuses on changes users can see in daily routines, including expanded customization for the “Today” tab, broader focus metrics, and improvements to Coach memory intended to make recommendations feel more consistent rather than starting fresh each day.

The company also highlighted deeper integration with Apple Health. Google said it has improved how data flows between Apple Health and its Google Health experience, and it further streamlined meal logging by allowing users to add meals through a quick photo or via chat with Coach. Together, the additions are aimed at reducing the friction of health tracking, with Google framing the updates as ways to bring more of a user’s health context into a single wrist-based workflow.

On the wearables side, Google described an expanded lineup that begins with Fitbit Air’s earlier generation and moves to its newest tracker. The company referenced Fitbit Air 3, including a “Pokémon Sleep Special Edition,” and it pointed to Pixel Watch 5 as its most advanced wrist option, featuring proactive assistance and advanced health tracking. Now, Google is adding Fitbit Edge, describing it as a next-generation tracker with advanced fitness and real-time guidance visible at a glance.

To match the expanded device lineup, Google is also introducing premium accessory options. The post includes details on a new Fitbit Air Metal Mesh band made from flexible stainless steel, marketed as a lighter, easier-to-wear option in two colors. Google said the Metal Mesh band will be available for pre-order at $69.99 and will also be sold bundled as a set with a Champagne Gold Metal Mesh band and an Obsidian Fitbit Air for $149.99, exclusively through Target and the Google Store.

Perhaps the most consequential software update is Google’s new “Health Guardian” feature set, which the company says is rolling out to Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge users with a Google Health Premium subscription later this month. Health Guardian is described as a suite that tracks subtle changes over time, with Google specifically naming blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends. The company also said eligible users who meet monthly wear requirements will receive a report at the beginning of each month intended to help support earlier lifestyle adjustments.

Google tied Health Guardian directly to its coaching layer, saying that with Google Health Premium, Coach can translate changes in patterns, adapt a fitness plan, and provide personalized lifestyle and wellness guidance. The company added that the feature aims to provide additional context that users can share with a doctor, while also emphasizing that the products are not intended for medical purposes in the way clinicians use them.

On the technical tracking side, Google said it improved automatic activity tracking, describing the update as more intelligent, accurate, and reliable. The company’s pitch is that improved automation logs workouts even when users forget, so the user can focus on exercise rather than interacting with the device. Google said the improved experience is rolling out across Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch models, with availability expected “later this month” on Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 as well.

The update also includes the caveat that features require a Google Health Premium subscription for certain elements, the Google Health app, and an internet connection. Google additionally notes that features are subject to change and that availability varies by device, while disclaiming that the tools are not intended to diagnose, mitigate, treat, or cure disease, nor to act as a real-time diabetes prescreener or monitor glucose levels. That framing matters because it draws a line between consumer wellness insights and regulated medical decision-making, even as Google uses language like “trends” and “reports.”

What to watch next is how quickly these improvements expand from Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge to additional devices and what new partner integrations and Coach capabilities follow. Google’s roadmap direction is clear: combine wearable hardware, more persistent coaching context, and higher-touch guidance features like Health Guardian in a way that reduces manual inputs. For users, the practical announcement will be how well the improved automatic activity detection performs in everyday workouts and whether the monthly Health Guardian reporting offers genuinely actionable prompts over time.

Why It Matters

  • The update deepens Google’s strategy of turning wearables into a continuous coaching layer, not just a passive tracker.
  • Monthly Health Guardian reporting and trend monitoring could increase user engagement by tying device data to recurring, plan-relevant prompts.
  • Improved automatic activity detection targets one of the biggest friction points in fitness tracking, which can affect whether users keep using the ecosystem.
  • By pairing software upgrades with premium accessories and new hardware in Fitbit Edge, Google is trying to broaden appeal across both wellness users and style-focused buyers.
