Google Wallet expands TSA PreCheck Touchless ID access for airport travelers

Alphabet’s Google says its Google Wallet app is now supporting TSA PreCheck Touchless ID for a wider set of travelers, using a digital identity credential to speed security screening without physical document handling.

Google said on Wednesday that Google Wallet is now the first digital wallet to partner with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration for TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, with the company aiming to let more travelers move through airport security using a phone-based credential instead of repeatedly presenting documents at checkpoints.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is designed to make screening more seamless by using a touchless, digital process for participating travelers. Google framed the update as a reduction in friction at the security line, where travelers typically need to hand over or scan identification items multiple times before entering the screening area.

In its announcement, Google positioned the change as an expansion of availability, stating that Google Wallet can help more travelers access TSA PreCheck Touchless ID. Google did not provide in its post detailed numbers on how many additional travelers are covered, nor did it specify which airports, devices, or traveler categories are included in the broader rollout.

The company also described Google Wallet as the consumer-facing app that will hold and present the TSA credential experience, tying the airport workflow to a mainstream digital wallet product used for storing and managing items on a phone.

From Google’s perspective, the update fits into a wider effort to connect identity and security-related use cases to mobile platforms. By pairing a government security program with a widely adopted consumer app, Google is effectively creating a bridge between an airport credentialing flow and everyday mobile technology.

For the travel sector, the potential operational value is straightforward: if more travelers can complete identity checks with fewer physical steps, airports and airlines may see improvements in throughput and customer experience at busy checkpoints. That could matter most during peak travel windows, when screening bottlenecks can quickly cascade into delays.

Still, Google’s post left several practical questions unanswered. It did not spell out the full scope of the expansion, including the specific airports involved, whether availability depends on traveler enrollment status beyond TSA PreCheck, or what phone models and Wallet settings are required for use.

The company also did not disclose timelines for airport-by-airport adoption or provide guidance on troubleshooting when a traveler cannot use Touchless ID at a given checkpoint. Travelers may still need to rely on existing TSA PreCheck processes if digital enrollment or checkpoint compatibility is not in place.

As the TSA pre-screening workflow rolls out further, the key development to watch is whether Google Wallet and TSA continue to broaden coverage across more airports and whether other digital wallet platforms will be able to participate in the Touchless ID credentialing experience. Any added transparency on availability, device requirements, and participating locations would be a key indicator of how quickly the change scales beyond early adoption.

Why It Matters

  • If adoption grows, touchless digital identity at checkpoints could reduce repeated document handling and improve screening throughput during peak times.
  • The move deepens Google’s role in identity-adjacent consumer technology, tying a regulated security process to a mainstream mobile wallet.
  • Wider participation could influence how airports plan staffing and checkpoint operations, particularly for lanes that support digital credentialing.
  • The expansion sets a benchmark for how other wallet or identity providers may seek similar partnerships with government agencies.
