The cornerback, a key piece of New York’s improved secondary, has agreed to remain with the organization for the next three seasons, keeping him under contract through the 2029 season.
The New York Giants have signed cornerback Greg Newsome II to a three-year contract extension that keeps him with the team through the 2029 season, the club announced at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Wednesday.
Newsome, an established starter in his first full stint with the Giants after previously playing for the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars, is in the middle of his first season in New York at the time of the announcement, with the extension reflecting the team’s intent to build its secondary around him beyond the current year.
The Giants’ release frames the deal as a “full-circle moment” for Newsome, who previously bet on himself in free agency with the goal of landing a long-term home. The same statement notes that the extension came after he was the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
On the field, the team’s update credits Newsome with playing a significant role in the defense. Through eight weeks of the season, the release says the Giants have allowed 6.14 yards per pass attempt (second-fewest in the league) and have produced a 32.9 opponent three-and-out percentage (first). Newsome is described as having started all six games in which he played, recording 25 tackles, six passes defensed, and an interception.
Newsome’s contract extension also comes with continuity for New York’s defensive staff leadership. The Giants’ release links his transition into the role with comments from defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson about Newsome’s impact in the secondary.
