The distinction matters for how the Guardians and Stephen plan the next step of his development. A brace procedure is generally associated with a roughly 12-13 month timeline, while Tommy John surgery typically extends to a 13-14 month window. Prospect rankings underscore Stephen’s perceived ceiling. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the fifth-best prospect in Cleveland’s farm system, while Baseball America places him slightly lower at No. 12. With Stephen now headed for surgery, those assessments translate into a question of timing, not evaluation, namely whether he can resume structured mound work soon enough to stay on track for a post-injury developmental arc.
