Gunman fatally shoots Montreal police officer at hotel, police say; suspect killed in exchange

A gunman armed with a long gun opened fire at a hotel in Montreal early on June 23, killing a police officer, according to police statements reported by NPR World. Officers arrived at the scene and confronted the suspect, and during the ensuing exchange of gunfire the suspect was shot dead, police said.

NPR reported that the suspect’s attack began inside or near the hotel, where the officer was killed. After the shooting, police said other officers fired back to stop the attack and prevent further harm.

The incident occurred in Montreal, a densely populated Canadian city where hotels can draw both local residents and visitors, including families and convention attendees. Police response in such settings typically includes securing surrounding entrances and keeping bystanders away from the area until the scene is stabilized.

Police did not provide, in the NPR report, additional confirmed specifics such as the suspect’s identity, the officer’s name, or the exact sequence of movements at the hotel. Authorities also did not detail in the report what, if any, additional suspects were sought or whether the gunman acted alone, beyond the confirmed fact that the suspect was killed by officers.

The shooting raises questions for investigators about how the attack unfolded and what intelligence, security measures, or policing conditions were in place at the time. Investigators in cases involving police gunfire and civilian fatalities typically examine body-worn camera or dispatch records, witness statements, and the physical evidence at the scene.
