Hatton Hornets move to Class 3A, Region 5 as coach Nikita Stover enters Year 2

Hatton’s football program will open a new chapter in 2026, entering Class 3A, Region 5 as it seeks a clearer path back to postseason success. The Hornets will face a region that includes East Lawrence, Curry, Danville, Fayette County, Haleyville, Oakman and Winfield, reshaping the weekly stakes for a team that has become used to navigating tight matchups.

Coach Nikita Stover begins his second year at Hatton, a stage often defined by continuity and sharper execution. In a second season, the expectation is that the identity of the program becomes more consistent, with returning players settling into defined roles and younger contributors being integrated with less disruption than a coaching transition year.

The foundation for that build is the 2025 season the Hornets just completed. Hatton posted a 7-4 overall record and went 6-2 in Class 4A, Region 7 play, finishing third in its previous region. Those numbers suggest the team was capable of winning enough league games to stay in contention, even if it was not positioned at the very top when the season tightened late.

In the playoffs, Hatton’s run ended quickly, but the margin was narrow. The Hornets fell 20-19 in the first round at Madison Academy, a result that points to a team that could keep pace in elimination football even if it could not turn that competitiveness into another week. One-point playoff losses can also shape offseason priorities, often emphasizing red-zone conversion, late-game ball security, and the details that separate close finishes from automatic outcomes.

With the move down to Class 3A, the Hornets will likely be judged by how quickly they adjust to new opponents and different kinds of matchups. Region 5 also concentrates a mix of programs that are accustomed to playing meaningful games because regional standings determine seeding and playoff positioning, so even early nonconference form can quickly become secondary once league play begins.

Looking ahead, the key question for Hatton is how it responds to that combination of momentum and disappointment. The program has a recent résumé of winning records and competitive postseason play, but it will need to translate that into region results in Class 3A. Watching how the Hornets handle the first stretch of Region 5 opponents, and whether they can turn close games into wins, will offer the clearest early read on whether Year 2 under Stover produces a playoff push deeper than the first round.
