Honeywell-linked community solar project SB-14 reaches commercial operation in upstate New York
The 7.01 MW DC / 5 MW AC facility, developed under a multi-project agreement involving PowerBank, is now operating and selling electricity credits to subscribers through New York’s NY-Sun program.
Honeywell International is gaining another piece of clean-power capacity in upstate New York through a community solar project that has started commercial operations. The project, known as SB-14, is located in the state and has moved into commercial operation status, according to PowerBank Corporation, the developer behind the site.
SB-14 is a ground-mount solar facility with 7.01 megawatts of direct current capacity and 5 megawatts of alternating current capacity. PowerBank said the project can generate enough clean electricity annually to power about 875 homes. It is also intended to operate as a community solar site, which means subscribers receive bill credits based on electricity production from the solar system rather than taking delivery of physical power at a specific location.
The project is part of a broader 21 MW DC Honeywell portfolio developed in upstate New York. PowerBank said SB-14 is one of three projects in that portfolio, alongside SB 13-1 and SB 13-2, and that SB-14 is the second project from the set to reach commercial operation. With SB-14 now operating, PowerBank said total clean energy generation tied to the portfolio has reached 14.02 MW.
PowerBank also described the commercial structure behind the development. In September 2023, PowerBank said it completed the sale of the projects to Honeywell and entered into an engineering, procurement and construction agreement, or EPC, under which PowerBank built the facilities through commercial operation. The company said the total transaction value, including the sale and the EPC agreement, is approximately 41 million U.S. dollars.
Under that arrangement, SB-14 was developed and constructed by PowerBank for Honeywell International. The announcement frames the EPC agreement as covering a portfolio of three community solar projects totaling 21 MW DC, suggesting Honeywell is assembling a larger solar position through purchased assets plus an ongoing construction relationship to deliver the projects to operational status.
PowerBank said SB-14 is being built to sell credits to subscribers under the NYSERDA NY-Sun program. NY-Sun is a New York state initiative that supports solar installations and establishes mechanisms for community solar participation and associated incentives. For subscribers, the credits represent an approach to gaining solar benefits without owning rooftop equipment, while for project operators it provides a defined framework for monetizing production through program-driven crediting.
While the announcement confirms operational milestone timing and core technical sizing, it does not provide several details investors and industry observers typically look for in project updates. PowerBank did not disclose the specific term length for crediting, any contract pricing assumptions, or the size of subscriber participation expected at launch. It also did not give information on how operations and maintenance responsibilities are handled for SB-14 beyond stating that the company retained an operations and maintenance contract for the projects, without further numerical terms.
For Honeywell, operational community solar capacity can support corporate clean energy goals and broaden the geographic footprint of its energy procurement, particularly in states where community solar programs allow broader access. For PowerBank, achieving commercial operation on additional projects can be an important step toward recognizing development progress and meeting EPC delivery timelines. The next items to watch are whether SB 13-1 and SB 13-2 reach commercial operation on schedule and whether subsequent updates clarify portfolio performance once all projects are producing credits.
Why It Matters
- The SB-14 milestone adds operating community solar capacity within Honeywell’s upstate New York portfolio, moving projects from development into credit-generating status.
- Community solar credits under NY-Sun provide a defined monetization path that can be attractive for developers seeking structured revenue tied to generation.
- The portfolio approach, with sale plus EPC delivery, illustrates how corporate buyers can scale renewable exposure while using project development and construction partners to manage execution risk.
- The lack of disclosed credit pricing, contract terms, and subscriber volumes means market participants will likely look to later filings or updates for financial detail.
