How are Pirates prospects performing in the Arizona Fall League? Sanford leads a strong October surge
Wyatt Sanford’s 454-foot homer on Oct. 23 highlighted Pittsburgh’s Arizona Fall League push, while other Pirates prospects logged mixed-to-inconclusive production across the Glendale Desert Dogs roster.
Wyatt Sanford delivered the top moment for the Pirates’ group in the Arizona Fall League, taking a second-pitch offering on Oct. 23 deep to center for a 454-foot home run and an immediate, victory-lap style trot. The blast reflected a broader power swing in October for the Pirates’ No. 5 prospect, who is batting.275 with an.814 OPS in the AFL.
Sanford’s offensive run is carrying more weight after he missed most of June and July with a broken hand. The Pirates’ organization notes he has been a frequent presence on the field, playing nearly every day for the Glendale Desert Dogs and continuing to thrive at shortstop since his 2024 second-round selection.
The Desert Dogs, however, are struggling as a team. Pittsburgh’s prospects are helping fill out the Glendale roster, but the Desert Dogs enter the week at 6-14 through games played on Wednesday.
Sanford is not the only Pirates name on the roster. Catcher Easton Carmichael (Pirates’ No. 8 prospect) has shown early pro promise from his first full season, but in the AFL he is in a slow stretch, hitting 3-for-30 (.100) with eight strikeouts and three walks.
On the infield/third-base side, infielder/outfielder Jhonny Severino (Pirates’ No. 28 prospect) has been working mostly at third base in the AFL. He has one home run and 10 walks while batting.209 and posting a.358 on-base percentage.
Pirates’ pitching has produced its own contrast. Right-hander Bryan Mena has been the most effective of the group with 7 2/3 scoreless innings so far, while right-hander Brandon Cain has posted a 7.11 ERA in 6 1/3 innings. Other arms, including Michael Walsh (6.75 ERA in 6 2/3 innings), Zander Mueth (nine runs allowed in four innings), and southpaw Cristhian Tortosa (11 earned runs allowed in five innings with eight walks) have had more difficult outings.
Pittsburgh’s catcher picture also continues to rotate. The Pirates note that Carmichael is sharing time with Dodgers catcher Anson Aroz and White Sox catcher Grant Magill, and that fellow Pirates catcher Luke Scherrer was added to the Glendale roster on Monday. Scherrer is listed as a catcher in the AFL after playing mostly first base earlier in the year.
Why It Matters
- Individual prospect output in the AFL matters as a late-season evaluation window, especially for players returning from missed time.
- Sanford’s near-daily role at shortstop gives Pittsburgh concrete looks at how the bat and glove work together in game action.
- Glendale’s 6-14 record underscores that prospect performance is occurring within a challenging team context, so individual production may carry more report than team results.
- The wide range in pitching outcomes highlights which arms are holding command and run prevention as the AFL stretches forward.
- Catchers rotating across teams and prospects complicates role stability, making usage an important part of the development assessment.
