THE APEX TIMES
At the Arizona desert’s midway point, nine young Kansas City prospects have separated themselves with standout pitching, speed, and early power for the Surprise Saguaros.
Kansas City’s top prospects are using the Arizona Fall League as a midseason measuring stick, with the Surprise Saguaros reaching the halfway point of the league schedule. MLB Pipeline’s graded list and Kansas City’s farm-development track show nine players getting meaningful reps, including several who have already produced at-bats, strikeouts, and game-changing baserunning against older competition.
Of the group, outfielder Angeibel Gomez has been the most explosive teenager. At 17 years old, he made his stateside debut on Oct. 4 after appearing in 47 games in the Dominican Summer League, and through nine AFL games he is slashing.333/.421/.485 with a.906 OPS, including three doubles and one triple. His speed has shown up as well, with four stolen bases.
Pitching has also produced a clear highlight. Left-hander Justin Lamkin earned the AFL’s Pitcher of the Week after retiring all 13 batters he faced over 4 1/3 perfect innings against Mesa on Oct. 21. Through four starts, Lamkin is 3.52 ERA with 14 strikeouts, a 0.78 WHIP, and opponents hitting.148 against him, while the release notes his season was interrupted earlier by a left shoulder strain.
Speed and patience remain central themes for the Royals’ middle-of-the-order profile. Outfielder Zion Rose has stolen eight bases and drawn 11 walks in 11 AFL games, and he is hitting.295/.458/.409 with an.867 OPS, including a home run and nine RBIs. The same report ties his season to past health issues, including ankle and hamstring injuries during his final college year at Louisville.
Power and athletic adjustment are showing up in Surprise’s lineup. Catcher/first base option Brooks Bryan is posting.282/.349/.641 with a.990 OPS through nine games, with four home runs and 12 RBI, and six of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases, including two doubles. The Royals’ eighth-round 2025 Draft pick has also gained first-base experience during the fall despite primarily catching in his career to date.
On the mound, the fall has been more of an uneven evaluation for some arms, while others have controlled their innings. RHP Josh Hansell has yielded one run in six AFL appearances, carrying a 1.69 ERA with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. By contrast, RHP Felix Arronde has struggled after moving up a level earlier this year, and in his only AFL appearance he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three in one inning.
