Hunter Greene’s 2026 return starts unevenly as Reds drop decision to Orioles

Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene returned to the rotation for the 2026 season debut on Saturday night, and while the strikeouts showed up early, the control did not. The Reds ultimately fell 8-5 to the Baltimore Orioles at Great American Ball Park, a result that left Greene’s first outing as more of a rust report than a polished reintroduction.

Greene’s line reflected the inconsistency. He gave up eight runs on seven hits while issuing four walks, and he still managed seven strikeouts. He worked deep into the contest on 89 pitches, with 53 of them for strikes, but the free passes and elevated counts proved costly. MLB reported that the four walks were one off Greene’s career high, and that his eight earned runs tied a career high.

The command issues fit the context of his comeback trail. Greene underwent a procedure on March 11 to remove bone chips from his right elbow, and MLB noted he made only one appearance during spring training and then moved through a minor league rehab assignment with three starts. Reds manager Terry Francona said Greene thought the ball came out well but was hurt by deep counts and a lack of command, crediting Baltimore’s ability to foul off two-strike fastballs.

Baltimore struck first and built momentum in the opening frames. MLB described how the Orioles took an early 3-0 lead, including a three-run home run by Samuel Basallo off a 100.4 mph fastball. MLB also highlighted the pitch-speed context, noting it was the second-fastest homer an Orioles player has hit in the pitch-tracking era, behind a 100.8 mph homer by Adley Rutschman from Sept. 17, 2023.

Greene’s own assessment, according to MLB, emphasized the same theme of timing and adjustment. He said he didn’t do a good job channeling adrenaline and acknowledged being especially amped on late heaters that he pulled early, adding that at this level those mistakes require adjustments. After the early damage, he found a response in the second inning, using a pair of strikeouts to work around a one-out walk to Jackson Holliday.

For Cincinnati, the loss matters less as a standings snapshot within one game and more as an early report about how quickly Greene can regain full operational control after surgery. A pitcher can still miss bats and generate strikeout numbers, but four walks and a career-tying earned-run output in a debut start increases the workload on the rest of the staff and can shorten the margin for error on nights when the bullpen is leaned on for longer than planned.

What to watch next is whether Greene’s fastball shape and location settle into a repeatable pattern as his innings ramp. The Reds will also look for signs that the strike-throwing (53 strikes on 89 pitches) improves into deeper counts without sacrificing the swing-and-miss ability that made him an ace-caliber starter. Given the spring and rehab timeline MLB outlined, the expectation can reasonably be that command returns in stages, not all at once.
