The projected lottery pick says his game is built to “pass and shoot” in a similar mold to the Indiana Pacers’ star heading into the June 23-24, 2026, draft.
Keaton Wagler, the former Illinois guard, is positioning himself for the 2026 NBA draft with a specific comparison in mind: Tyrese Haliburton. Ahead of the league’s June 23 and 24, 2026, selection events, Wagler told reporters that his approach to the game is meant to mirror the Indiana Pacers All-Star’s impact, particularly in the way he pushes the ball forward and creates offense through passing and outside shooting.
Wagler’s self-scouting comes as expectations swirl around his draft stock. As reported, he is being viewed as a projected lottery pick, meaning teams in the top range are weighing him not just as a prospect with skills, but as a potential early contributor with a clear path to meaningful minutes. In that context, the Haliburton comparison is more than branding, it is a description of the style of player Wagler believes he can become at the pro level.
The essence of what Wagler is emphasizing is playmaking paired with shooting. Haliburton, who has built his reputation around ball-handling, court vision, and jump-shot accuracy, has also become a centerpiece type of guard in Indiana’s offensive system. Wagler’s stated belief is that he can translate similar strengths, especially the ability to move the ball efficiently, make reads on the fly, and keep defenses honest with range.
Indiana’s Haliburton is also referenced in the reported storyline through his rise to financial and on-court prominence, including an agreement described in the report as a $244.6 million deal. The point for Wagler is straightforward: if the skill set is there and the role fits, the ceiling in today’s NBA can be enormous for guards who can run offenses and punish coverages with shooting.
For Wagler, the hard part is not the comparison itself, it is the translation. NBA evaluators typically want evidence that a prospect’s passing instincts survive against faster decision-making, that his shooting produces under pressure and on motion, and that his strengths show up consistently across different looks and defensive schemes. A draft-year conversation about “passing and shooting” indicates an identity, but teams will still sort through how efficiently the identity shows up in real possessions.
What to watch next is how Wagler’s “two-way gravity” is evaluated in pre-draft settings, because an offense-first guard has to be more than a factory for jumpers to justify lottery positioning. Even when the headline is playmaking, NBA clubs will also look at how he handles the speed of the break, his commitment to attacking closeouts, and whether his decision-making holds up when teammates are not in the exact same spacing patterns he saw at the college level.
Ultimately, Wagler’s Haliburton parallel sets a clear measuring stick for the type of guard he wants to be in the NBA. If he can back it up with consistent shot quality and offense-creation impact, the comparison may resonate long after the lottery is done. If not, the same matchup will become a reminder that traits need to become production quickly in order to earn the kind of early roster responsibility lottery selections carry.
