Intel details how it and MSI co-engineered the first Arc G3 handheld, targeting “console-like” access and longer play time
Intel says more than two years of joint hardware and software work went into MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+, the first handheld built around the company’s Arc G3 Extreme processor, with teams focused on performance, thermals, battery life, and stability in a compact form factor.
Intel used Computex in Taipei to share what it calls a three-part blueprint behind the world’s first handheld gaming device built around the new Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor. The device is MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+, a handheld gaming PC intended to deliver PC-class performance in a size and weight Intel describes as far smaller than a typical mobile computer. Intel also said the platform work includes practical software changes meant to improve how long the device can run and how cool it stays under load.
Intel and MSI are not starting from a blank page. Intel said MSI’s earlier handheld generations were built around Intel Core Ultra Series 1 (Meteor Lake) and Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) processors. For Arc G3, Intel says it took a different approach by creating a purpose-built system-on-a-chip, or SoC, optimized specifically for handheld gaming. Intel senior director Nish Neelalojanan said the teams “distilled” what they learned from the prior two generations of handheld designs into a new category of devices meant to set a “new standard” for handheld experiences.
Alongside the chip and board design, Intel said the companies also tuned software to address two of the hardest handheld constraints: battery life and thermals. Intel said software optimizations increased battery life and helped keep the device cool to the touch during demanding gameplay. For the gaming experience itself, Intel said it worked with software leaders including Microsoft to support “Xbox Mode” on Windows 11, a feature designed to streamline console-like controls and access for players on PC-based hardware.

Intel’s account emphasizes that performance, thermals, battery life, and comfort are tightly coupled in a handheld because hardware has less physical space to work with. Shih said “every millimeter counts” because trade-offs in the layout can undermine announcement quality and ultimately user experience. He described how, from the beginning, Intel and MSI worked together on motherboard layout, cooling, and power optimization to find a balance appropriate for a compact system. As an example, Shih said engineers chose to place the CPU and DRAM components on opposite ends of the board to maximize space and improve thermal efficiency, while noting that other designs tend to keep those components next to each other to protect announcement strength.
Announcement integrity is an especially sensitive issue in small devices, and Intel said it supported MSI with announcement simulation and validation to help the design reach the right blend of stability, efficiency, and performance. In Intel’s telling, the close engineering collaboration looked less like a handed-off parts relationship and more like a unified effort aimed at handheld gaming performance. Intel also said the project was validated through a key milestone: the joint teams powered on the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ for the first time in January 2026, calling it the point that confirmed hard board-level circuitry decisions were paying off.
Intel said its engineers used a continuous feedback approach as the team moved from initial bring-up to performance tuning. Intel director Bruce Cheng, director of Advanced Co-engineering in Intel’s Customer Client Engineering group, described the power-on milestone as proof that the performance gains the partners sought were not theoretical. Cheng said the work then shifted toward additional validation and performance tuning focused on running AAA games, along with monitoring how game titles and player preferences evolve faster than in laptop markets. The device’s objective, in Intel’s framing, is to keep that learning loop going so adjustments can be made quickly as software and real-world usage patterns change.
Intel said the Claw 8 EX AI+ is the first Intel-based handheld to offer console-like accessibility via its platform and Windows 11 integration, while also improving performance through steps that include freeing up system resources and precompiling shaders, features intended to smooth gameplay. The company also pointed to an efficiency goal, including “up to 20 hours of battery life versus the previous generation,” while also noting that performance and battery life vary by configuration and usage conditions. Intel added that the device is available for sale, including an exclusive “void purple” color, and said Intel is preparing to show additional Intel Arc G3 handheld designs from OEM partners such as Acer and OneXPlayer coming to market soon.
