Iowa Army National Guard unit steps into mission supporting V Corps and NATO

DES MOINES, Iowa – The 734th Regional Support Group, Iowa Army National Guard, uncased its colors and formally began its mission in Central Europe during a Transfer of Authority ceremony at Camp Kosciuszko in Poznań, Poland, on Aug. 13. The event symbolized V Corps’ posture and readiness in its pivotal role defending NATO’s eastern flank.

Brig. Gen. John Mountford, deputy commanding general of readiness for V Corps, emphasized the strategic environment and highlighted the responsibility to demonstrate unwavering U.S. commitment to NATO. He also commended the 510th RSG and expressed full confidence in the 734th RSG's ability to sustain operational readiness.

“The 734th Regional Support Group has earned this moment of recognition,” he said. “I have no doubt that the 734th will continue to provide base operating support for V Corps with steadfast dedication, discipline, and the expertise required of your mission.”

During the ceremony, the 510th RSG cased its colors and transferred authority of seven forward operating sites across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to the 734th RSG. These responsibilities include base operating support-integrator functions, logistical support, quality‑of‑life services, and operational contract support for U.S. and NATO partners.

Col. Daniel Meyers, outgoing commander of the 510th RSG, offered candid advice to the recently arrived 734th RSG. He stressed the importance of being adaptable and of being able to operate under tight timelines.

“We know the mission is in highly capable hands,” he said. “We expect great things from you in the months ahead. Remain vigilant, stay focused, be ready.”

The incoming commander, Col. Anthony Smithhart, extended his appreciation to the 510th RSG for setting a high standard, affirmed the 734th’s alignment with V Corps priorities, and highlighted the 734th Regional Support Group’s strong and enduring lineage.

“There are seven campaign streamers hanging on the colors right there,” he said. “All earned during World War II, as part of the legendary 34th Infantry Division. The 734th was there with them, fighting through the mud of Anzio, liberating Rome, and shattering the enemy's final defensive barriers at Po Valley.”

For the incoming 734th RSG, the ceremony marks the start of a new rotation shaped by evolving requirements, multinational cooperation, and the continued importance of forward presence in Europe.

“Our mission is vital,” Smithhart added. “We are the backbone that enables combat power and ensures operational readiness and deters those who would do harm to us and our partners.”
