The former Duke guard is continuing his pre-draft process with a workout hosted by the NBA’s most recent champion, a development that underscores how teams view his game translating to the next level.
Isaiah Evans’ path from the Duke Blue Devils to the NBA draft has entered its high-tempo stretch, with the former Duke guard working out for a marquee NBA organization described in reports as the league’s most recent champion. The session is part of the typical pre-draft workflow for prospects, but it carries added meaning when it comes from a franchise at the top of the sport’s current hierarchy.
Evans, who played his college basketball at Duke before entering the draft conversation, is aiming to hear his name called on draft night later this month. The workout represents a direct look at how NBA personnel evaluate his skills in a controlled setting, and it suggests that at least one major contender is actively studying the fit of a wing-oriented guard archetype.
From Duke’s perspective, the news is another sign of the program’s ability to develop prospects for professional roles that require versatility. Evans’ work at the college level has been tied to guard play that blends perimeter creation with the willingness to operate within team structure. As prospects move into workouts, teams often emphasize areas like shooting mechanics under contact, shot creation at game speed, ball-handling security in traffic, and decision-making in spacing-heavy half-court possessions.
The reported workout was hosted by “big-brand” NBA leadership, and the specific framing matters. When a title-winning organization invites prospects, it can be an indication that scouts are searching for immediate rotation help or for longer-term development pieces that can be coached into playoff-level reliability. For Evans, a workout with a recent champion also functions as a benchmark, since contenders tend to be more particular about the traits they believe can survive postseason scouting.
Still, the existence of a workout does not guarantee a selection, and it does not automatically clarify Evans’ draft position or the exact role he would be assigned in the NBA. The next practical step in his process will be further evaluations tied to draft events, where teams compare their internal scouting reports against what prospects demonstrate across multiple interviews and testing environments.
What to watch next is how Evans’ skill set is characterized by NBA teams as the draft approaches. Whether his best outcomes are framed as a shooting-and-creation guard, a defensive-minded wing who can defend multiple positions, or a development prospect who offers upside will shape how franchises discuss him. For Duke, the bigger story is how one of its recent guards continues to draw attention from the league’s upper echelon, turning years of ACC preparation into one of the most visible stages in basketball.
