In a joint practice against the Commanders, Baltimore’s rookie receiver again stood out in multi-receiver work, sharpening the question of who becomes Lamar Jackson’s most reliable second target as camp decisions tighten.
The Baltimore Ravens’ training-camp storyline has been clear for weeks, and it intensified Wednesday during a joint practice with the Washington Commanders. Rookie receiver Ja’Kobi Lane continued to build momentum, standing out as one of the more productive and noticeable playmakers in the team’s three-receiver looks, and earning a starting role within those groupings. That matters in Baltimore because the Ravens’ offense, even at full speed, often funnels key targets through the quarterback’s top reads, making the WR2 conversation a high-leverage camp race.
Lane’s rise is notable because it is not only about flashes in space. According to CBS Sports, the rookie has already carved out a starting role in Baltimore’s three-receiver sets, and he kept that trajectory moving in the joint practice setting against a Commanders defense that is also auditioning roles. Joint practices tend to bring out clean matchups and tighter coverage reads, and Lane’s ability to remain prominent in those specific packages helps explain why camp observers are treating him as more than a long-shot development project.
The bigger reason Baltimore’s receiver rotation is being watched so closely is the uncertainty surrounding Rashod Bateman. The Ravens have been managing the question of how that receiver spot will stabilize, and that uncertainty creates a larger opening for a player who can contribute quickly. CBS Sports frames Lane as a candidate who could become Lamar Jackson’s WR2, but the immediate takeaway from the practice reports is simpler: Lane has shown enough to be used early in meaningful passing packages.
Lamar Jackson’s passing habits put pressure on offensive coordinators to assign roles that line up with both timing and separation quality. In Baltimore’s system, the second receiver often has to do multiple jobs in the same drive, from winning underneath leverage to setting up deeper looks on play-action timing. When Lane is being trusted in starting alignments in three-receiver work, it suggests coaches believe he can handle the route-tree and snap-to-snap demands enough to earn consistent reps, not just a situational cameo.
Wednesday’s practice against Washington also adds another layer. The Commanders are a separate roster with their own coverage priorities, so standout performances in joint work can indicate that a player’s skills translate across personnel groups. CBS Sports specifically points to Lane’s continued standout level during the Ravens’ time on the field at Owings Mills, which reinforces the idea that his camp momentum is not isolated to one practice or one specific drill.
Still, camp momentum is not the same as season certainty. A rookie earning starting reps in select formations does not automatically define the weekly depth chart. The Ravens’ ultimate receiver pecking order will depend on a longer set of evaluations across multiple practices and game-style preparations, including how well different options execute in pass protection responsibilities and in-route adjustments. For Lane, the immediate challenge will be sustaining the same clarity of role as the reps spread, and for Baltimore it will be determining whether the WR2 role can be settled internally without losing the structure that makes Jackson’s offense efficient.
For fans watching the Ravens’ title picture, the short-term watch is straightforward: how Baltimore continues to deploy Lane in the three-receiver passing sets and whether his presence becomes an increasingly consistent feature of Jackson’s target hierarchy. If Lane keeps showing the same command of routes and timing that he has displayed in camp reports, the Ravens may be closer than they think to solving a key offensive question early, turning a speculative development label into a functional WR2 option by the time the regular season preparations solidify.
