After the Knicks’ championship run, Brunson leaned into a light, kids-show interview and offered the most famous-person-in-his-phone question as the setup for a joke about his Mavericks-era rival.
New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson is clearly getting used to the spotlight that comes after a championship, and his latest appearance took the attention in a distinctly playful direction. During an interview on Kids Sports Reporters, Brunson was asked a familiar trivia-style question, who is the most famous person in his phone.
Instead of pointing to a pop-culture name, Brunson made the question about basketball by giving Luka Dončić as his answer, then jokingly describing him as “the worst teammate” he’s ever had. The humor, as presented in the interview coverage, came from the contradiction between how elite Dončić is as a player and the clearly exaggerated complaint Brunson offered in a way meant for laughs.
That exchange matters less as a serious scouting report and more as a window into how Brunson, fresh off the Knicks’ title, is handling the elevated attention that follows a deep postseason. In a league where interviews often focus on fundamentals, film, and preparation, Brunson chose a simpler tone, meeting the moment with an off-the-wall line that works for the young audience he was speaking to.
The context behind the joke is straightforward. Brunson and Dončić have spent years as high-usage, high-profile stars in the same broader NBA universe, and their games against each other have drawn major attention. So even without taking the comment literally, the nickname-style framing indicates that their on-court matchups are the kind of storyline both players are aware of and comfortable referencing publicly.
For the Knicks, the larger takeaway is that Brunson’s persona in public appears to be steady, not overproduced. The championship pressure is real for any franchise leader, but the interview suggests he’s more focused on maintaining an approachable, team-first image than turning every media moment into a serious monologue.
The Mavericks angle is also easy to understand. Dončić has built a reputation as a centerpiece who touches the ball constantly and changes games with shot creation and playmaking. If Brunson’s “worst teammate” remark is taken at face value, it would contradict that reality, so the better reading is that it was delivered as an entertainment beat, not a critique of Dončić’s work ethic or team role.
Still, the NBA is full of small gestures that can echo in the public conversation, especially when the subject is a franchise player like Dončić. Whether the joke turns into light offseason banter or remains a one-off moment, it reflects the way players increasingly engage fans through accessible media formats rather than sticking only to traditional postgame interviews.
For what to watch next, the Knicks’ offseason narrative will likely keep centering on how New York sustains championship-level cohesion, with Brunson as one of the key figures in that conversation. And for Mavericks fans, anything that references the Dončić-vs-Brunson matchup lens tends to keep that rivalry story alive even when the teams are not playing games on the calendar.
