The Sooners will turn to their former Cowboys tight end as they try to stabilize an offense that ranks near the bottom of FBS production entering the final four games of the regular season.
Oklahoma has named former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten its offensive coordinator and play caller for the remainder of the 2026 season, taking over after the school dismissed offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.
The announcement also makes clear the scope of the move: Witten will lead Oklahoma’s offensive staff in preparing a plan for the final stretch of games, starting immediately.
Oklahoma is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in SEC play, and the school’s offense ranks 111th among 138 FBS teams in total offense, according to the report. With four games remaining in the regular season, Oklahoma’s slate includes Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Missouri.
This is Witten’s first college coaching job, after he was hired earlier in 2026 as the Sooners’ tight ends coach. The decision reflects a mid-season shift in leadership intended to produce immediate offensive continuity through the end of the year.
