Jets add Jalen Walthall at wide receiver, waive/injure Quentin Skinner

New York continues trimming and retooling its offseason receiving depth, bringing in a productive FCS playmaker while moving Skinner off the active group with an injury designation.

The New York Jets’ offseason receiver shuffle took another step Monday, as the team announced it has signed wide receiver Jalen Walthall and waived/injured wide receiver Quentin Skinner. The move, coming as rosters cycle through OTAs and early summer evaluations, underscores how quickly depth-chart positions can change in the NFL even for players who have already seen game action.

Walthall arrives with a résumé built on high-volume production at the FCS level. According to the Jets, he began his college career at Hawaii before transferring to the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where he played the past two seasons. Over that stretch, he recorded 155 receptions for 2,137 yards (13.8 yards per catch) and 22 touchdowns, with nine games of 100-plus receiving yards. The Jets also pointed to his best outing as a Cardinal, when he posted 220 yards and two touchdowns against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Skinner’s departure is framed differently because of the injury designation attached to the roster move. The Jets said Skinner originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent last spring, and was signed to the practice squad in August. He then appeared in one game for New York last season. One of his most notable NFL moments came on a two-point conversion against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, which Jets game coverage credited to Skinner after quarterback Brady Cook connected on the conversion attempt.

Skinner’s college background is also included in the transaction release. The Jets listed him at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds and described his production at Kansas, where he totaled 1,585 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns over his collegiate career. In his final season as a Jayhawk, the team said he caught 24 passes for 557 yards and three touchdowns.

For the Jets, the personnel logic is straightforward. Walthall gives them another body for a position group that often looks for upside during summer, especially when the top-tier roles are already accounted for. At the same time, waiving/injuring Skinner acknowledges that the roster can move on from a player’s health status even if that player previously earned opportunities on the game-day perimeter.

What to watch next is how the receiving competition plays out from here. With Walthall now in the building, the key questions are whether his game against higher-level defensive schemes translates quickly to NFL route timing and ball skills, and whether Skinner’s injury status limits his path back to New York’s plans. In the background, the Jets’ ongoing willingness to make small, targeted receiver moves suggests they are still searching for reliable depth that can separate and contribute in organized team activities and preseason reps.

Why It Matters

  • This is a straightforward depth move for the Jets, adding Walthall’s FCS production profile while adjusting their receiving group due to Skinner’s health designation.
  • The two-point conversion Skinner made in Week 18 highlights that the Jets were willing to use him on specialized touches, and this move will determine who fills similar roles this offseason.
  • Walthall’s profile suggests New York may be targeting a receiver who can win early in routes and generate chunk plays, which affects how quarterback evaluation is done in summer practices.
  • The waiver/injury label means Skinner’s path could be impacted by roster timing and recovery, making the next few transactions and practice availability the real tell for his status.
  • For Jets fans, the receiver group remains a live roster-building story rather than a finished unit, and these incremental changes can foreshadow who the team trusts in August.
