New York heads to Kansas City after a stretch of production from QB Geno Smith on the road, betting on a balanced offense and continued tight-end involvement to slow a Chiefs defense that has been stingy overall.
The Jets will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9 at Arrowhead Stadium as New York looks to rebound after dropping their previous three games. Kansas City enters with a stronger record and returns home after losing two of its prior road contests.
A key theme for New York is how QB Geno Smith has handled away games recently. The team’s official preview notes Smith has delivered a passer rating of 100-plus in five of his last six road games, and it points to a more explosive offensive look last week as evidence that the offense can move the ball.
In Week 8, Smith completed 22 of 30 passes for 290 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. The Jets also got big yardage from their skill positions, including RB Braelon Allen and WR Adonai Mitchell both topping 100 yards, and the team reported that six different players reached the century mark in a single game, a first for New York since 2010.
The preview also highlights Kansas City’s approach on the ground and through its weapons. It notes the Chiefs upgraded their running game with Kenneth Walker, who is ranked No. 3 in the NFL with 770 rushing yards, and it points to rookie RB Emmett Johnson’s growing impact after a 73-yard receiving touchdown in a loss to Denver.
Kansas City’s offensive identity is still centered around TE Travis Kelce. The Jets’ preview says Kelce leads the Chiefs with 43 targets and 29 receptions for 410 yards this season, and it adds that Kelce could reach his 200th regular-season game on Sunday. The team also notes Noah Gray is targeted less often, while scoring against the Broncos last week.
On the matchup side, New York’s game plan appears built around keeping multiple tight ends involved. The Jets’ Week 8 package reportedly included season highs in 13-personnel, with Mason Taylor and rookie Kenyon Sadiq combining for significant snaps, and the preview cites Sadiq’s 186 yards and one touchdown this season, plus Taylor’s 136 yards and two touchdowns after missing Weeks 3 and 4 with a thumb injury.
Defensively, the Chiefs are framed as a top-tier unit by point totals. The Jets’ preview lists Kansas City’s defense as allowing 18.7 points per game, and it contrasts that overall success with two recent losses in which opponents scored 20 and 28 points.
Coach Aaron Glenn characterized Kansas City as a fully formed, repeatable contender rather than a one-week opponent. In the team’s preview, he said the Chiefs have created a sustainable winning situation through players, coaching, and organization, and Glenn said New York knows what to expect from Kansas City’s identity heading into Arrowhead.
