Jets’ Azareye’h Thomas answers Year-2 question: stronger coverage, faster processing in Aaron Glenn’s system

In his second NFL season, New York nickel-to-boundary cornerback Azareye’h Thomas is emphasizing what he says is the game slowing down for him, after stepping in as a boundary starter and posting run-and-pass impact across the Jets’ first five weeks.

New York’s defensive plans for the boundary corner spot have effectively become Azareye’h Thomas’ job in Year 2. After the Jets traded CB Sauce Gardner to the Colts, Thomas took over as a boundary starter and finished his rookie season with 12 games played (5 starts), including 7 pass breakups, tied for sixth among rookie cornerbacks.

The Jets and their defensive staff have been leaning on Thomas’ ability to handle both man and zone concepts. Head coach Aaron Glenn said Thomas is “intelligent enough to play man and zone,” pointing to his comfort with press-man responsibilities as well as zone landmark and help understanding.

Thomas’ own assessment is that the transition from hesitation to decisiveness is the clearest change. He said the “game” is slowing down, that his confidence level is up, and that he’s “going” and “hitting” more consistently, attributing part of the improvement to better positioning as the team continues installing its scheme.

Statistically, the improvement shows up in the way he’s allowed targets and limited results when he’s been on the field. Over five starts in his rookie season, Thomas was one of only 16 players with 100-plus coverage snaps at outside corner who allowed a completion percentage under 50.0 percent, and the only rookie to do so.

The Jets’ current season sample points to Thomas building momentum late. In the team’s Week 5 win over Cleveland, Thomas allowed one reception for eight yards on 44 coverage snaps, and the release says he has 11 pass breakups over his last 11 games. This year, he has also been credited with 20 tackles (14 solo) and 2 tackles for loss over five games, and the team said he has taken 335 snaps (100 percent).

New York’s next opponent is AFC East, with the Jets set to play the Patriots after New England’s offense opened up in a recent win over Las Vegas, where QB Derek Maye threw for 269 yards. For Thomas, the immediate test is maintaining his outside-corner assignments against an offense that is generating bigger chunks.

Glenn and his coaches describe Thomas as a physical fit and an intelligence-driven option, a profile that has helped him grow from a rookie starter into a core boundary piece.

Why It Matters

  • The boundary corner spot is now anchored by Thomas, clarifying New York’s outside coverage identity after Gardner’s departure.
  • If Thomas continues to process coverage rotations faster, it can help the Jets keep their scheme flexible between man and zone looks.
  • The Jets are treating Thomas as a weekly starter, with the team highlighting full-snap involvement and recent production.
  • New York’s next AFC East matchup against New England sets up a direct stress test for Thomas’ man-zone versatility against a pass-first offense.
